i have a ucller remote, havent tried it on crows yet, but the magpie call is deadly. if theres mags about, they cant help but com in. just hide in a hedge near a tall tree and thats where he,l go. the fox call ok, but you can download any call you want to it. ebay. about 80 stg.

Just FYI, I am not sure quite how legal is it to use an electronic sound to call birds such as magpies and crows. I know I've been told before but I keep forgetting!

Someone else may happen along with better info. There is, to my knowledge no problem using them in regards to foxes.

Perfectly legal to use on any vermin!
Not legal to use it on game birds!

This is just conjecture here but whats to stop me putting a cheap mp3 player and a set of equally cheap battery powered speakers into a ziplock bag or something instead of buying a dedicated electronic caller?

I know there may be issues around legally downloading the actual calls, but presuming I can could this work?

The last time I looked at buying a dedicated caller the price of it was horrendous for what it is really. This is kinda something I've noticed with a lot of "huntin and fishing" products theres some markup on stuff because it comes with a camo paint job compared to, for lack of a better word "civvie" products that do a similar job. But thats a different topic for a different day!

Wally you can call a fox without spending money, its called sucking on your hand and making a distressed rabbit sound.

Electronics Callers can be only used on animals and birds not protected by the wildlife act.
Farmers say Oh suc suc suc and cows come running , not Ipod used their!

Been there done that - Look through the tips section here.
Or you can use a mobile phone with the fox call ring tone connected up to the amp. That way you can "Call " the fox in - ha ha

I bought one of those siren systems for a car, in the clara market, 8 euro!
Comes with loud speaker and all! Attached this to my mp3 player using a two way jack i got in tesco's, around 6 euro!
All you need then is a battery and away you go!!:D

Works just as well as any electronic call, and you can put as many calls as you like on the mp3 player!
Just make sure the mags and crows you download are from European birds and not American or Australian ones!;)

I use the lockvogel,Its a right job. great for the magpies and crows, not bad on the foxes in fairness. bought it in waterford, 'Fishin n shootin' that was a good many years ago but I reckon he would order you one or tell you where to get it.

The problem with most of these electronic calls is that the grays and mags get wary of them after a while! The same recordings seam to have been used in a lot of different makes of calls!

The calls which have the ability to download sounds off the internet are a good idea! If you keep changing your calls the mags won't cop on and you'll have more sucess!

If you Google ARCHIVAL SOUND RECORDINGS you'll come across loads of mags and gray sounds, also some fox barking sounds!
There's plenty more good sites on the net, and if you spend a little time searching, you could round up 20 or 30 good recordings and you can change them around from time to time!

I made my own caller from an old credit card and works fine, squeeling rabbit sound
simply cut the card in half down the longest side and bend both pieces slightly, then place them together so that the 2 curves face each othe leaving a small gap.
then tape it together at both ends and blow into it,squeeling rabbit sound and variable depending on the length and strenght of the blowing.
it calls grey crows and magpies no bother, never tried it at night for foxes but cant see why it wont work for them either.

And don't forget you can use an old mobile phone with the calls on connected up to the amp. That way you have a remote caller with a least 2 calls, The ring tone and message tone

I bought a Ucaller a few weeks back. I haven't field tested it yet, but it can fill my back garden full of confused magpies, rooks, jackdaws and the odd grey crow within a few minutes! It looks very promising.

Callers really do work well on the crows, magpies and foxes

Still have had great success in the past on foxes with the car mirror and styrofoam or polystyrene when the battery in the caller died

locksvogel do the business with foxes,if you cant get one try jim halpins shooting and fishing supplies in listowel, i think he has two left, postage is no problem.
the u caller remote is good, especially on greys and magpies it also has the advantage of being able to download sounds.
if you go onto you tube search for homemade fox callers by "frenchie boy"they work i`ve had some great success lately with one of his:D

put out a magpie decoy as well and a couple of old eggs next to it, drives the poor old maggies totally nuts:cool:

the shooting grounds in knocknagoshel has the u caller remote for 99 euro,i use the hare/rabbit sounds for a couple of minutes the the magpie chatter for about 15 seconds, foxey seems to lose his caution for some reason.

    I am using a Mini-Colibri that I borrowed from a mate.
I was out two nights ago trying it out and I only had the shotgun.
The rabbit distress call was used and I ran it for about 30 sec then stopped, after a minute I used the head torch to scan for eyes and would you believe just outside shotgun range was a bright pair of eyes, they quickly took off across the field and I turned the light off, the moon was so bright I could see the shadow of the fox 50-60m away and I could see it stop and hold outside my range.
I think he had winded me as the wind changed and was maybe coming in to the call but got spooked by the headtorch.
I think the call is brilliant, less than 2mins and I had a fox in sight!
