    Hi

I read on Sat that the IAA had observer flights up looking for ash

They don't have any aircraft that I know of , what did they use , anyone know ?

Also can you actually see this ash on a flight , or is it detectable only by other means ?

You can it as a dirty layer when level with it and you can smell it, even taste it as it comes into through the vents. But I'm sure they have a more sophisticated method than that.

The IAA used C172 EI CFY for their ash observation flights.

A Lufthansa A340 also flew around over Ireland yesterday on a sampling mission.
