Exercises for lower back - cycling?

    Hi all, i've recently started doing a few exercise to strengthen my lower back. Swimming has been recommended to me as very good for the lower back and i intend to start asap.

    I've read that running isn't great for the lower back, but just wondering what other activities might be good. Is cycling an option?

    Would you be willing to do deadlifts? They're my favorite exercise. Really fun to do, and they work a lot of your muscles, in particular your lower back, but also your legs, arse and arms.

    The problem with cycling is that most peoples technique isn't great and the position can exacerbate or contribute to low back pain. A lot of cyclists suffer with low back pain. Also if you do have low back pain any bumps can aggravate you further unless you've a really good bike.

    A stationary bike having said that can be great if boring.

    Thanks for the replies. I'm generally willing to try anything. Excuse my ignorance Arrrggh, but what are deadlifts?

    Chocgirl - a stationary exercise bike might be a good idea. I did read something about a normal standup stationary bike not being as good as a recumbent for sufferers of lower back pain. I think it mentioned the tendency for users to slump and get into a poor posture on an upright.

    I'm guessing though that a recumbent bike would be pretty expensive.
