I have a pretty stupid question about aircraft, i'm sure there's plenty of others out there who do too, maybe if tehy stuck them in here??

    So here's mine

When i look up to the sky and see a plane, sometimes it has a really long white cloudy line after it, other times it's a really short line (disappearing very quickly) and other times there's not white cloudy line.

What is it? Is it something to do with the engines? Or Clouds?

If there's no contrails (the white streams) it's likely the aircraft is not high enough (and therefore the air's not cold enough) for the exhaust gases to freeze and condense into visible streams, I'd imagine the length of contrails is along similar lines, if the air is colder, the contrails will condense more and stay visible for longer or variable winds at high altitude will dissipate the contrails quicker sometimes.
