Sad in one way, but an interesting explanation of why they do what they do in another.

That, sound on sound and the Newell article got me through a full research paper on the NS10's. ;) haha. Its an interesting story depending on what angle you take.

    Whaddya mean, "angle"?

I meant to say research paper, not article... it's linked in the SOS article Paul:

Great , I've never seen that before.

I visited Newell in Vigo in Spain in 2007 and have kept in contact since. He's always good for an interesting email.

He had an article in a magazine that was the precursor to Resolution (was it called Studio Sound?) that, shortly after the NS10 was discontinued, compared the speakers of the day to the NS10 and the then other studio regular the Auratone, that he sent me.

Unsurprisingly both faired very well from a technical point of view.

A point perhaps lost on those inexperienced with speakers is that it's less of a case of what one 'likes' as opposed to what actually 'works' ..... which is , in my opinion, a measurable concept.

The oft heard criticism of the NS10 (harsh , squawky etc) is a possibility on a worn out nicotine stained speaker driven by a less than good amp .

But I still think a pair in good ones driven by a good amp tells you virtually all you need to know.

Yes, the research paper shows the transient response of a lot of monitors. Now I understand why I don't get on with Genelecs. I always hated the sound of NS10s, but as you say, for mixing they work! Any time I mixed on NS10 it drove me mental, but those mixes all translate, even now. The speakers I use now are Spendor designed sealed boxes.

What do you think of those Digidesign speakers Paul? I like PMCs and am attracted by the idea of a digital crossover.

I've not heard the Digidesigns though am familiar with the PMC TB2s on which they're based.

The TB2s are a great speaker. They use a port but not in the traditional sense.

My understanding of it is that instead of the woofer flapping around, as it can with a badly designed port smearing the bass all over the gaff, you get advantages of a port plus some sort of firmness ( the column of air in the transmission line) against which the speaker works tightening the impulse response.

Well for one how it originated and how it became popular.
How its built and how it contributes to the sound it reproduces.
Why compared "better" monitors they faired so well.

You can take those three relatively small areas and read up about each. Tis what I mean about the different angles or you can read up on the whole lot.

    PaulBrewer,
I actually and disappointingly dont have a soft copy of my little research project, though its really just whats been talked about in the three main sites linked to here.

Im in the middle of getting my degree so Im sure I can do much better then my HND paper.
