As the show is nearing its end, thought this might sooth the wound a little

    Has anyone watched it?

I saw a few random episodes, thought it would be crap, buts it's actually really good

Thought it was new, but its had 9 seasons already, and still a current show

Gna watch it from the start on DVD

Spooks for me has better storylines and better acting but no character as exciting or iconic as Jack Bauer.

Watched the first few episodes of Spooks a few years ago. Thought it was good, but didn't see much of an over-arching story developing. Do the episodes become less stand alone and more over arching as the show develops?

Spooks became more and more like a British 24 as it went on, and it lost its charm as a result. Later seasons are a single continuous plot thread that usually feature over the top, 24 style mega threats like factions in the British government attempting a coup, biological and nuclear attacks, stuff like that.

The first few seasons were the best. More low key, less Hollywood, character based and gripping. Season 1 started slowly but season 2 was superb; the last couple of episodes, though standalone, built up to the S2 finale which for me was probably the best spy-TV episode ever made.

Jack Bauer is iconic alright but he turned into a bit of a caricature by the end; he was basically a super hero. The spies in Spooks are real people and more human. Tom Quinn and Adam Carter were great leading characters in their own right and then of course there's Harry Pearce, a canny old veteran spook who is just as legendary as Jack Bauer in my book.
