Ive just read this article from the Independent:
    http://www.independent.ie/sport/horse-racing/taoiseachs-tax-gamble-2182050.html
"Online gambling is a global industry that booms despite many attempts to ban or regulate it and the danger is that Cowen's proposals will unfairly target those few betting firms that choose to locate in Ireland and create jobs here."
If I correct in assuming that FF are purposely trying to financially crucify Ireland? If you in a hole then STOP digging! When will FF stop digging? I curious to know if anyone has any information on the punishment received by the rich bankers and builders that brought us into this mess. Has anyones personal assets been seized? Or is this like the cops in Donegal that set up that nightclub owner who lost their jobs? Please someone tell me that they have received some kind of punishment that in line with bringing an entire country to its knees. Is this going to be another Charlie Haughty caught gun running and let off scot free type of affair?

Mods if this is in the wrong place please move it to where it should be.

Why not, its as good a place to start as any. Some time ago I said that Boards should organise a political party, I still think thats a good idea. Ireland need a new party more than ever.

I'm guessing as well you'd be against an increase in tax of alchohol and Cigarettes ey?

It's called Moral taxation,in which governments tax things in a hope to slowly draw peple away from damaging products and industrys i.e. Cigs and Drink.

They do this as well because most of the time these industrys arent hurt very much,an increase tax with gambliing only means the gambler has to pay more.

And I'm pretty sure its not only FF who support this, you might here FG say they are against it but they'd do the exact same thing.
Ireland need a new party more than ever.
    Too true hah.

FF will be too discraced for a while,Fg is the bad guy in everyghost busters film, trying anying to get into a place of power((I.e. recruiting celebs and minor celebs)),Green party...ha!(9Not that I dont like them but the'yll never get in power)) and labour aint the greatest either.

Yes increasing the taxes on cigs and drink so they were the highest in Europe was a great idea, cigarette smuggling is booming and so is the cross border sales of alcohol.

It's the same as the idiotic decision they made to limit what adverts can be shown at certain times of the day on Irish TV stations, they didn't for a minute consider that a company would simply take the revenue out of the state and instead show it on UTV or Sky and get the same audience.

FF seem very intent on putting money back into the ra's hands alright.

The government make way too much money off of drink and fags to ever want people to stop, IMO they'd tax it until the numbers of people smoking/drinking decreases and then they'd reduce the tax again. Their just looking for the sweet spot of maximum tax with minimum people refusing to pay.

I'd like to point out that FF were indeed diggin a hole then the IMF would be in here.

Both the IMF and the Eurozone do see that Ireland is improving and has take the steps,Infact wasnt it released recently and the Recession ended sometime last winter...so jeez stop moanin they'll be voted out next election, atleast they are doing somthing,FG plans with the last election were based ona 14% growth each year!!!!Ireland is a small countyr that feeds off others,so when the big countrys get f**ked over so do we:(

Dont get me wrong,FF did **** up but any of the other partys would have been in the same position, tbh I nearly feel bad for Cowen,Bertie fecked him over,he knew this was coming and jumped ship.

These "bet shops" are selling an addictive service to vulnerable people. Where's Joe Duffy to shut them down?

Cowen was the finance minister under Bertie.

Re the article, I'm not entirely sure what it means.

AIUI the bookies are going to have to subsidise the racing industry and they're trying to work out some way to tax overseas online casinos.

Why not tax the winnings or sale proceeds from the horse so? Why tax the bookies who will be passed that tax onto the punter? The owners are not taxed for their winnings from the horse after all so why should the punters be?

Its only a proposal - like many ideas when the merits are discussed, they may or may not run with it. Cost/benefit etc.

I'm sorry, do you expect this government to do something sensible?
