Why not jailbreak the phone and install vlcplayer and copy the avi s to the iPhone

Handbrake is free, it will happily convert the videos from avi to mp4 using preset profiles.

    http://www.Handbrake.fr

I've also used WinAvi converter and while it's faster it's not free.

    Them's the brakes.

    Cheers

I was using this program yesterday, and to convert a 50 minute video took around one and a half hours.. Is this normal

My iphone is factory unlocked, so i dont need to jailbreak, i found that with my old iphone when u jailbreak, the who Os slows down incredibly...

Jailbreak and unlock are completely different , unlocked means you can use a sim from any network in it where as jailbreak allows you to use non apple approved apps

    Does VLC work for you?
I tried it and it wouldn't play anything at all. I found mplayer excellent though and it played every format I tried.

OP jailbreaking so you can play your avi files is really a good idea.

How did you get the non mp4 format files onto the iphone?

After you jailbreak your phone you can "ssh" into it. That means you can access it like a portable drive so you can see it's root folders and files and add files as you like.

It sounds complicated but it really isn't. I use a program on my laptop called iphone Folders and once my ipod touch is hooked up to the computer via USB I can transfer files the same way I would to a USB pendrive.

There are lots of tutorials on youtube to help you set it up. It only take 5 mins to get going and it's well worth it. I have found MPlayer to be the best player I've tried. It plays multiple formats perfectly and it's free.

Yes it works but a little fussy with some avi's, i will give mplayer a try and see if its more friendly.

Use imToo to convert them down to 320 mp4. Also, don't go over 1200kbps or you may have playback issues.

Video rendering takes time. Divx to mp4 (40 mins) usually takes 20 mins on a 2.5ghz dual core:)

mplayer is good but i don't think you can get video out on the TV and you can not delete files from the iphone, you need to connect it to computer to delete files.

Sometimes it crashes and it keep playing sound until you go back in. :)
