DTT: Sound but no Picture?

    Hi all,

I'm moving into a new house at the minute and there's already a working aerial on the roof (I can get RTE 1, RTE 2, TV3 and TG4 in good-very good quality) through my Samsung 40" 1080p TV (about 2 years old - bought in DID.. don't have the model number to hand though!)

Anyway, this TV has a "DTV" button so out of curiosity I connected this aerial to it and scanned - it's picked up 10 channels.. the RTE's, TG4 and radio but although I have clear sound, there's no picture. Any ideas?

Also, I thought I might get the "basics" on this aerial as well - ie: BBC, ITV?
I'm in Co Cavan not far from the border at the end of the new M3 motorway, so is Freeview an option from here? I've noticed that the aerial on the house next door is pointing a different way.. maybe 30-45 degrees of a difference.

I do have Sky, but it'd be nice if I could get the terrestrials throughout the house as it's wired with a distribution box from this aerial to points in every room it seems.

Any suggestions or info much appreciated! Cheers!

    mpeg 2 tuner..

you need mpeg4 for irish dtt.

have a look at the threads at the top. they may have some info as to where to point for uk dtt.

Sounds like your Samsung doesn't have an MPEG4 decoder so you won't get pictures on the Irish DTT. You could try an MPEG 4 to MPEG 2 cam, though by all accounts they are not very good.

Can't say if Freeview is an option in your area. Why not talk to the neighbour with a different facing aerial. If it is an option your set should pictures and sound as Freeview uses MPEG 2.

If your neighbours aerial is pointed to brougher mtn co Tyrone near Enniskillen with good analogue, the digital is possible.

You will need a good group a aerial and amp.
Power from brougher is being increased by a factor of 50 in 2012 by which time you should be well inside its service area.

like as said already, you have a uk digital spec tv so need an mpeg 4 to mpeg 2 cam [conditional access module] to get pictures on the irish.
See the sticky threads at the top.
