    Hi

I'm looking at a car at the moment.

    Its a 2004 BMW 320D.

    Now the reg is 04 D 73XXX

Could the fact the reg ends in the 70 thousands mean it could be imported?

A guy in works is saying this and if its imported from the uk it could be clocked.

This may sound daft but id like to know more as its a lot of money.

    Kind Regards

I wouldn't buy one that doesn't have a verifyable service history.

Whether it's from the UK, Ireland or anywhere else isn't a problem. Irish dealers can clock cars too, and BMs can hide big miles reasonably well.

Forget the reg. Don't buy without a verified service history.

    They are all imported! ;)

Unless it has FSH never trust the mileage. Or pay for low mileage without FSH.

If you can get a look at the Car's registration cert it will say when the car was first reg'd in Ireland.

EDIT: I agree with the above about service history, but if it does not bother you thats how you can find out.

can't emphasise the "verified" bit of "verified service history" enough. as in verify with the dealers that supposedly serviced the car before you pay a deposit

Thanks for the quick replies lads.

The sales guy says it has a service history but mentioned it had the usual gaps in the service logs

I also think this is strange. A link on 2 sites with the same reg but different mileage and price.

Cartell will also tell you if the car was originally registered in another country.

The mileage looks just like a mix up between km and miles as both have the same figure, 108,000. Whether it is km or miles will only be resolved by viewing the car.

BTW it is not a SE as described in the advert, it is a bog standard ES model with no multi-function steering wheel and manual rear windows.

    Well spotted.

Wouldnt be too concerned about the multi function steering wheel and manual rear windows.

The ES also does without Climate Control - settling only for manual air-con.

To the op - the notion that there is an automatic link between a car being imported and clocked is a complete nonsense. As stated already, wide open eyes, a verifiable service history and a good deal of caution are pre-requisites to buying any car regardless of origin.
