I ordered my Mahlkonig Vario today. While I was at it, I picked up and Aeropress. I also managed to solve the switch problem and got my little Gaggia Cubika up and running and descaled.

It may well be that once I get tuned in and get some decent coffee into the Gaggia that it will keep me happy for a while. But, as is the nature of things, I was drawn to the links in the stickies and the lovely toys in them. I've been looking to see what was out there in the Espresso machine market and was just looking for opinions in terms of what I should be looking for in a new machine.

I'm very drawn to the lever machines on aesthetics alone. What criteria do you use when choosing machines?

If my memory serves me that Cubika doesn't have an over pressure valve (OPV). This means extraction at ~15Bar, ideal extraction is at 8.5/9Bar so you'll be running too high. I'd still recommend you hang onto it for a while and try and perfect your espresso before you decide if you'd get the use out of a more expensive machine.

The cheapest type of machines are single boilers, next is the heat exchanger machines (Hx) after that you're into dual boilers. Info.
