27 inch iMac - too big?

I'd be interested to hear any feedback from 27 inch owners regarding this. The large screen looks fantastic of course and is great for video, etc. But what about ordinary computing stuff like web browsing and email? Is it a bit overkill? Have you had any eye strain?

Playing around with it in-store doesn't really give one a sense of what it's like to use day-to-day.

Prof, its fantastic to use, bought the Quad before xmas to replace a Mac Pro with 23" Cinema Display and have never looked back, Video is fantastic on it, Resolution amazing, no issues with eye strain it only looked big for the first day now it feels like an old 15", my 22" at work feels small and useless, make the leap you wont regret it.

When I first got mine, it looked huge, but I knew from previously moving up a monitor size (I've had 13", 15", 17" and 20" Macs over the years), that I would get used to it, and I was right.

Now when I look at a 20" iMac, it looks small, and I recently saw an old 17" iMac being used for demo's in a photography business, and it looked microscopic...

I do find that I like to sit back a little more from the 27", so ensure that the desk/surface that it's going on is nice and deep. Also, with the room fully dark at night, the screen is a bit bright, so I turn it down a few clicks (never felt the need to do that on the smaller screens).

Get it, you won't regret it...

Yeah, a 17 inch is what I'm using at the moment and I find myself leaning into it a lot.

How deep for the desk do you reckon? I'd be a bit worried about this. My current desk is about 19 inches deep. Would that be enough?

Tbh I'd normally go for the 21 inch model without even thinking about it, but I don't want another C2D, nor do I really want to wait until (most likely) September for it to be refreshed.

What about noise? I thought I read something about them being a bit louder than the smaller models.

For web browsing do you tend to have two windows open?

    Thanks, guys.

19 inches would be a minimum for the desk, in my experience, but I'd still go for it.

No louder than my last iMac (2007 first-generation alu model) Mine has a sizzle/hum when the display is asleep, but not a big issue.

I hate having more than one browser window open, but have loads of tabs in the same window (each to his own). The big screen is great for iTunes and Mail - loads of columns and none of them crampe... ;)
It's also great for DVDs, and now, iTunes films (we don't have a big TV).

I've a 24 inch iMac and was originally debating getting a 20 inch one as I thought it would be too big. I can safely 24 inches was the way to go, and now find the 20 inch Macs too small. And if buying again I'd opt for an even bigger screen.

You will always use the extra screen space e.g. you can have a web browser and Office document open side by side. Remember, you can't upgrade the screen size if you change your mind after you buy the computer.

Just got one. Yeah, it's big and takes a fair bit of getting used to. Right now am not using anything fullscreen, but that may change as I get used to it. I've no idea what it's going to be like for gaming yet. Part of me wishes I'd gone for a 21 inch and resisted the allure of quad core but on the other hand after a week or two I'll probably have adjusted fully to the size and not find it odd at all.

That's how I felt, but now I wouldn't go back...
