I've downloaded the free 30 day trial of Microsoft Office.

If I want to install the full version I need a product key code....

Any suggestions on where I might come across one of these without having to fork out a load of €€€'s?

Come across? Well you could come across one on Amazon for 70 sterling.

Otherwise, I'd advise reading the charter.

    If you're a student, try here: http://www.software4students.ie/Default.aspx

Otherwise, your best bet is the Home edition of office: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Office-2008-Home-Student-User/dp/B000X86ZAShttp://www.amazon.co.uk/Office-2008-Home-Student-User/dp/B000X86ZAS, available here.

If you're really skint, you can just use OpenOffice, which is completely free, has all the features of Microsoft Office, but may display some documents slightly differently - download here: http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/aqua.html

Hi. Sorry if this is totally the wrong place for this query, infact I know it is but I couldnt find a general query topic!.. and as Microsoft office is the main thing I need from my old mac this is good enough!!!
I am trying to migrate from my old Mac (10.4) to my new mac (10.6) and I cant get past the first hurdle. I have them connected by firewire and am 99% sure i have all the setting enabled that i need but Im getting nowhere. Its as if the connection isnt there and the macs will not detect each other. I havnt yet discounted a dodgy cable but as it is brand new I dont really suspect that. Am I missing something glaringly obvious!!!???? I have scoured the net and canot find anything on this subject. It seems to be universally accepted that its as simple as connecting them up and off ya go!!!
    helpppppp!!!!

First question first, have you the mac turned onto Target Disc Mode?

Secondly, are you using Migration Assistant or are you simply dumping the 10.4 contents onto the 10.6 Mac?

Thirdly, if it's only MS Office can you try and transfer via Bluetooth?

This very thing happened me only yesterday. First three (PPC) transferred just fine but the fourth (Intel) wouldn't recognise the hard drive in the old machine.

Even after booting up from the old installer disk (10.5 in this case) the hard drive wasn't showing in Startup Disk.

So I put in the new 10.6 disk into the old machine and it seemed to jig it into action and the drive appeared. Not sure what was going on though.

Thanks both of you. Yup its in target disc mode. Im pretty sure im doing everything right. I would be in the mind that its a dodgy cable if it werent brand new. The new mac just sits there saying" waiting for old mac to start.I,ve tried it the other way round trying to get the old mac to detect the new one but same result.
    Hmmmmmmmm.
    Dodgy cable
    Dodgy port
    or
    am I missing something?

Oh yeah. I am using migration assistant and the old mac is pre blue tooth!!

If you are booting up the Mac from Power Up, Firewire can be a bit finicky at times (Holding down T button too late or for too short a time is a common problem) but it ought to be going. Try going into System Preferences of the Target Mac and starting up Target Disc from here; it is less hassle and finger stretching :)

You say that it's a new cable so it ought not to be a problem. I take it you have a 400-800 cable, yes? If not, a 400-400 with an adaptor will work as well. Make sure that you have the cables correctly into the port as they do require a bit of a push and unlike USB they can take a bit of a push in.

Lastly, what Mac are you booting up in Target Disc Mode?

try Open Office for Mac. It's better imo and free = http://porting.openoffice.org/mac/download/index.html

Im setting up the old mac in target disc mode but Ive tried it the other way round just for ****s and giggles!!! And ive set it up via system preferance aswell!!!!!
I shall try tapping in the cables with a small mallet next but to be honest I have rammed em in quite snugly. Its a 400 - 800 cable which set me back close to €30 with P and P etc

Oh wow. That looks good. If that works I might not need the migration. Thanks

Strange. Does it work the opposite way? Did you try Migration Assistant as well?

Yes. Thats what Im trying to do. Its as if the dam cable just aint there. I shall check if there are firewire software updates needed when i get home. It should be 2.3.3 I believe.
    Does a mac burn well?

So. After an initially polite yet incresingly tense call to Apple support I discover that migration from mac 10.4 to 10.6 is not supported. I asked the nice man why i could not have been aware of this before shelling out 30 euro on a cable or could not find out this info anywhere on line whilst banging my head off the migration wall for a few days!!!
    Grrr:mad:

Thanks for all your help any way

In fairness to the shop that sold you the Firewire, they didn't what you needed the cable for other than a data transfer. Still, it doesn't tell us why a basic Firewire dump hasn't yet worked for you, assuming of course that you have tried same.... With the same cable of course ;)

Target Disk Mode should still work regardless of OS, so you should be able to transfer your data over manually.
