Has anyone come accross this - the HSE dentist wasn't very informative - just told me to sit tight til the rest of the teeth come down and that she could get veneers when shes older (shes 7 now). However dentist also pointed out white spots on two new back molars (thats all the new teeth she has so far). I'm totally devastated - are all her teeth going to be like this???
    What has caused it ?

    Possibly MIH (Molar Incisor Hypoplasia).
Meantime, tooth coloured fillings can be bonded to the front teeth to mask the areas of concern- discuss with your dentist.

    Hi there

I know you are very concerned and worried but try not be too worked up. Something disturbed the tooth development in the first few months of your daughters life. This affected the molars and incisors.

They can be treated easily if necessary but you should have them checked out regularly as they may be more prone to decay. Often no treatment is needed except to keep them under review. It is quite common and comes as a shock when the adult teeth erupt beside the pearly white "milk teeth". remember the adult teeth are usually darker than the milk teeth so this may explain some of the changes you see.

Thank you both for your advice and information- should I push the HSE dentist for fissure sealants on those two back molars??? Or do I have to go privately to get them done (two top molars are erupting at the mo should I wait for them to come down)
Dentist did mention Hypoplasia - didn't mean much at the time but I have since done my homework online. The tooth coloured fillings for the front? Can this be done before braces - she is so concious of her "orange marks" unfortunately so are the other girls in her class. I don't want to sound like crazy mom but I just dont want this to iterfere with her psychological development (self esteem etc). She was born with mild congenital talipies and has had 2 ops to correct it - was in a wheel chair for 3 months last year so she really doesn't need this. Are you both dentists??

With these cases I think it is important to treat them cosmetically, depending on the severity of the case.

The first thing to try is microabrasion. Often these stains are less than 100 microns deep in the tooth and so removing that surface layer can remove the stain. This is a good and conservative treatment. This is accomplished with an acid mixed with an abrasive paste. This dissolves about 1/10th of a millimetre from the outside of the tooth.

If the stains are a bit deeper your daughter may need composites (white fillings) to replace the stains. This may have to be done by a private dentist.

    Hi,

Just bumping this thread as my son too has got Hypoplasia on his back molars and are currently orange\brown. His front 2 botton incisors are coming up and they look at this very early stage look yellow\orange.

Based on experience, are all his teeth likely to be affected?
What are the options for his front teeth?

Again, I'm concerned about the physiological impact this is going to have on him.

The Hypoplasia teeth have been confirmed by the dentist but she is very reluctant to elaborate on further details, only that they are not decayed and he has to come back in 6 months.

    Thanks.
