Dude....you need to do more than clean the carpets.....Rats pee everywhere so you really have to wear gloves as rat borne diseases are horrific.. .. and if you are getting someone else to do it tell them it rats they're dealing with for safety reasons. The seats, wells and boot require attention also....eeep

at minimum put detol into a spray bottle and spray it all over the carpets to kill some of the germs

Something like this might be worth a try.

I would be removing the seats and carpets and cleaning them with antiseptic and a power washer to be safe.

rent a carpet cleaner (ace hire or one of those places) and mix detol and strong carpet shampoo together and use it to clean the carpets

    Few questions:

    1) How did the rat get into the car in the first place?
    2) How did the rat die in the car?
    3) Why was the rat in the car long enough to die?
    4) Why are you telling people about this?!!

    Get a new car.

    5) Is this an old car?
    6) How was he dead (presumably on a carpet?) and not found for 3 weeks?

    Get a new car!

Take a good litre or so of petrol, pour it over the affected areas and light it. Burn it out.

Disease's, some which a carpet cleaner cannot find and cannot clean. They car needs to be fumagated and possibly an entire new carpet.

Hopefully children aren't in this car. Could you imagine a child dropping something on the ground, picking it up and eating it.

These are great suggestions. Also, you cound consider something like this if the smell just doesn't go away after a thorough cleaning with dettol or very dilute clothing bleach.

Reading this on my iPhone and I scrolled down to see the above post
I really thought you were going to say pour it over the car and stick a match to it lol

the person who said rats pee everywhere, they do they have leaky bladders, dont clean, bin
a danger to your health right now
remember some rats pee, is dangerous, did you ever hear of ratpoisning, there could also be ticks and fleas from rats if you feel a pick be very careful, ticks also gives lymes disease, and you can contract lymes in this country also

I would have the carpets ripped up and replaced without thinking about it.
Dead Rats = serious disease.. The seats would have to be properly disinfected before I would let a child back in the car.

I'd be calling my insurance company to see what they have to say about it. Really soundslike it could be some sort of technical write off. They won't want health issues on their hands.

Perhaps you shouldn't clean it at all until its assessed.

Plague and wiles disease worries aside.....what did the little bugger get up to when he had a little holiday in the gubbens of your car? It is very unlikely that he brought his own McDonalds to gnaw on.

Are you actually serious about this?

If a rat had been coming in and out of my car for a few weeks, then died in the car and was dead in the car for a few weeks before I found I think it'd be time to get rid of the car.

Seriously man get a new car...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,939 ✭✭✭goat2

are you still using this car, if so, you are putting yourself in danger, ticks, fleas, rat pee, all cause deadly disease

    + 1

O/P anything to do with Rats is dangerous. Get the car professionally done. Inform them of the problem and let a professional at it. You will never be able to get it 100% yourself!!!

Weils Disease will kill you and should you surive ytour liver can be fooked big time. It is present in Rats pee and can enter the blood stream in small amount through cuts. Also if you were to lick your finger or eat food without washing your hands you are at risk.

Seriously, clean every spot of that car with Detol or something stronger.
