Full licence receipt

I applied in the motor office for my full liscence today. gave them my certificate of competency and all. When I asked for a receipt, they told me I 'didn't need one' I asked could I drive on the road and she said 'you;re provisional is still in date'. Now I was under the impression if I got the reciept it would give me leave to drive until I got a full licence. I know its a grey area, but I can't imagine any guard imposing a fine on you during this period.

Now I have no provisional and no reciept, I know the licence will be out soon, but Its left me a bit confused. Anyone else not get a receipt?

I assumed that the motor tax office issued you a yellow reciept which would cover you until you recieved your pink license?

Thanks for your replies folks. I suppose the reason im really confused is because any time you hand over money you should get a receipt, so theres no excuse for that on their end.

I understand I need to have the pink licence in hand, but do I not also have to have the provisional licence at hand also when driving with l-plates. At the moment i have none, so Id be still wrong to drive anyway. Thats the dilemma.

Here in mayo they take your learners permit from you and give you a receipt to say you have applied for a full driving license. I asked what the story with the gardai would be and the woman behind the desk said if I showed the guard the receipt I would be fine. We must be above the law over here!

That's more down to people not understanding the law regarding newly licensed drivers. You are still not fully licensed until you hold your full license in hand. Applying for it is not sufficient, despite what someone in the motor tax office says.
I was told the same thing when applying for my license btw. I think where the confusion arises is that this would be the case if you were renewing a license.

I know of one person who drove for months with just the receipt as proof of a license. They were never stopped but it just shows that it should be explained that your not fully licensed until its on you pocession.
