Noisy Diesel

My mate has a 06 1.4 diesel Ford Fiesta, he recently sent it in to be serviced and since getting it back its very noisy. Now the noise seems to be coming from the engine so don't think they knocked the exhaust or anything. Only work done on engine was oil change. The noise seems to be worst when car is first started and goes away a bit as you drive it, although this might be just a case of getting used to it sounding like a tractor. Any ideas what it might be?

    Check oil level.

Garages have been known to forget to fill, overfill, leave filler cap off etc.

Oil may be incorrect grade also.

Bottom Crank shaft pully, happened on my old mondeo, Will get worse. Seems a common problem on the TDCi engine.

Is there anything can be done about the crankshaft pulley or is it a case of having to get it replaced at some stage

It is a replace job. Mine was going for ages, read over a year, before I got off my backside and got it changes. Part costs areound 120 plus VAT and on the Mondeo it is easy to get at. My car was difficult to start, was previouly advise Turbo actuator, DMF, injectors etc, but it was a simple fix.

Another thing to beware of with this engine. There are two altenator belt pullies on the 1.4TDCi, and they can get very noisy and make a roaring or howling noise. In rare cases, the bearings in these can overheat and fail, thereby shattering the pulley and throwing the alternator belt off. In extreme cases, the discarded belt can wrap itself around the crank pulley and pull the timing belt off. You do not want this to happen!

Get someone competent to remove the alternator belt and see of the noise improves. This will confirm if the pulleys (alternator / crank) are to blame.
