Guinea Pig or Rabbit Specialist Vet

    Hi

I'm struggling to find a vet in Offaly that I can trust with my guinea pig, Babs.

I've tried 3 different 'small animal clinics' and there experience with guinea pigs appears minimal.

If anyone knows someone who may specialise in guinea pigs or even rabbits I'd be very grateful for a heads up and would be willing to travel.

I think Babs may have kidney stones and if this requires surgery we would like the safest hands!

    Thank you :)

I know it's pretty far away but she specialises in rabbits and small animals I think?

I went to the pet hospital today and left Babs with Derek and he successfully removed a huge bladder stone (for a guinea pig) and Babs is at home eating already. So far so good!

    :D

That's great stones can be pretty sore I can imagine.
Things like dandelion and alfalfa may contribute to kidney stones aparently but some pigs are just prone to them.

Do you think high calcium foods like broccoli could cause them too? Just wondering. I'm feeding my bunny a lot of broccoli right now because she's feeding 5 babies! (though not too much to cause digsetive problems)

Glad your guinea pig is ok :)

Yeh I'd imagine this one was sore, the vet said it would be the equivalent of a golf ball in a human bladder!! Unfortunatly she was treated twice for UTI / Cystitis before the stones were diagnosed but at least it's gone now!

...And Babs is still going great this morning except she's not too impressed with her antibiotics!

I've knocked on the head any foods that are high calcium but Babs is almost 7 so hopefully there wont be a repeat if its taken that long for it to become an issue. Also added hydrangea, parsley piert and a little cornsilk to her diet for the anti-lithic properties.

    :o:)

Guessed it may have been a stone after she was still passing blood after two courses of antibiotics for cystitis but both problems present the same way.
It was as clear as day on the x-ray and the vet did the surgery while she was still under from the x-ray.

Also the Peter Gurney and Guinea Lynx pages are excellent resources.
