Hi all,Myself and my girlfirend are planning on heading to Italy for two weeks in July. We have freinds who will be in Sardina during this so we would like to meet up with them for the last four or five days maybe. Prior to this we would like to tour (not too much) some of the mainland or around the coast. We have been to Rome recently enough so no need to go back there. We would also love to see Pompeii. The best option then would be to fly into Naples and go from there. But i have heard bad things about Naples so should we avoid this? Any suggestions o n what to do for the 7 /8 days on the mainland would be great. Also is it easy to get a ferry from mainland to Sardina? Thanks very much

    Hey,

myself and hubby were in italy last september and loved it. We flew into naples and got bus straight to Sorrento (think it cost bout 10euro a head) (its about an hours drive if i remember rightly).

Sorrento is gorgeous. Spent a few days of our holidays just wondering around the town. Lovely restaurants and shops. We stayed there for 9 nights. We used Sorrento as a base to visit other places. We went to Capri one day which was gorgeous. We also took local bus to Amalfi coast and stopped at all the lovely towns along the way (positano, amalfi etc). We did this trip two days (went on bus one day and went by boat another day) (nice to see the coast from both). We also went to Pompeii which we loved. Spent a whole day there its HUGE! We didnt bother going to see Naples. Had heard it wasnt very nice as well so steered clear of it to be honest.

As far as getting from this area to Sardinia is concerned, i'm not sure.

OP, firstly it can be very hot in Italy in July. It was 40 when I was there last July. On Sardinia it can be mid 40s.

The South West of Italy is really good, lots of wilderness, old cities, picturesque towns

Naples is the most beautiful city in Europe. Pity about the criminality though.
