This has the danger of the dreaded list thread!!!

Be sure to discuss facts and aspects as to why the ending is so good!!!

    For me:

    Se7en

For approximately the last half an hour of the film, the sadistic serial killer John Doe has been leading Detectives Somerset and Mills on a trail out into the middle of the desert, where two more bodies are apparently left. These are the last two victims of his 'perfect 7' killings (Envy and Wrath). However, nothing is quite as it seems... From the moment that mysterious van appears on the horizon and approaches the 3 men, to the final, unbelievable, brilliant conclusion... One of the best, most intense and utterly gobsmacking twist endings ever.

    The Usual Suspects

"Who is Keyser Soze?"... Just when you think that you have it all worked out, just when every piece of the puzzle has been put in place... It's thrown back in your face and shattered, just as sure as Agent Kujan's coffee mug shatters as it hits the floor.
The seemingly innocent and naive conman Verbal Kint has been fabricating everything... He walks from the station and as he is walking loses his limp, and produces the same gold cigarette lighter we had seen earlier... Oh. My. God...

    Minority Report

For so long, the slimy and smarmy Federal Agent Daniel Whitwer (Colin Farrell) has been the primary antagonist of this piece. Pre-Crime (a branch of the police who can 'see' murders before they happen and stop them; the pre-murderers are locked up in solitary confinement and are punished as if they had committed their crimes) Chief John Anderton (Tom Cruise) has been exasperated by this ambitious and 'by-the-book' Fed, and when he is accused of a 'pre-murder' he is confident he cannot commit, he is positive it is Whitwer who has set him up. Unable to accept the consequences, Anderton tries to fight it, his colleagues begging him not to run... he quips back "Everybody runs". As he runs, Daniel Whitwer is on his tail and trying to stop him. Whitwer seems to want to be Pre-Crime chief more and more... Until
Whitwer himself is murdered by Lamarr Burgess (Max von Sydow), the elderly, father-like founder of PreCrime, who is desperate to hold on to what he created. He needed to frame Anderton as Anderton was close to revealing a terrible secret about Pre Crime
. The ending reminds us that crime and deceit most certainly never pay, but also provides one of the best twists in recent times.

Angel Heart starring Micky Rourke. If I discuss why its so good or compare it to other films with twistrs then I will be giving away the ending!!!!!!! Rourke is brilliant in it needless to say.

Arlington Road with Jeff Bridges, Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack. Now some people spotted the twist in this tail before the end but imho it is brilliant. Tim Robbins and Joan Cusack are just creepy in this and put in great performances. Jeff Bridges is good but its Robbins and Cusack who steal the show.

Basically the film starts off with Robbins and Cusack moving next door to Bridges Professor character
who begins to suspect that his new neighbour is a terrorist.
The story moves on quite cleverly from there.

    that he'd lose I mean

Apologies for starting the dreaded thread list!!... I will try again:

    12 Monkeys

For me one of Bruce Willis best roles playing a convict who is sent back in time to try and find a cure for a virus that has wiped out most of the human race which forces the last 1% of the human population underground.

    Shuttle

Not a hugely known film as far as I am aware - stumbled across it myself. Two girls trying to get home from an airport and just happen to get onto the wrong shuttle bus. Really enjoyed this and the ending
that the girl ends up in a crate as part of a human trafficing ring
    hits hard.

    No Way Out

Kevin Costner and Gene Hackman in an excellent 1980's thriller in which they try to locate a KGB mole in the pentegon after the secretary of defence's mistress is found dead.

    The Game

Michael Douglas successful business man given a unique birthday present from his brother played by Sean Penn.
loved the 'I was drugged and left for dead in Mexico and all I got was this stupid t-shirt'
    .

    The Mist

Group of villagers trapped in a local supermarket after a mysterious mist rolls in. If you have not seen this already - whats keeping you?!

    Night of the Living Dead

Romero's classic Night of the Living Dead (definitely not the remake!) with the classic line of 'there coming to get you Barbara' and a great twist ending.

    Memento

Guy Pierce plays Leonard an ex Insurance Salesman who cannot create new memories and his last memory was of his wifes murder. The film plays in reverse as Leonard tried to figure out who his wife's killer is.

    Right at your door

Another one that may not be that well known. A dirty bomb goes off in Los Angeles and this film tells the story from the point of view of one family. Thought provoking and well done for a small budget.

First film that came to mind when I saw this thread, I can't speak highly enough of it. I bought it very cheaply and watched it one night with a few cans and it's just a highly satisfying movie, building the tension right up until the completely out of the blue ending!

Yeah - I had a few glasses of wine in me when I was watching it and had to do a minor rewind as it was a case of 'what?!'!.. very good ending!

    Can I also add:

    The Empire Strikes Back
Luke - I am your father
I remember watching it in the cinema at the time and the intake of breath from the whole audience was superb!

    And

    The Others
no wonder the kids looked so pale!!!

I enjoyed it above all of its faults, namely Brosnan's accent, but I think maybe it tried too hard with the twist, it was far too elaborate for the hectic nature of the film.

As for another twist, I know it's TV but to me they surpass the quality of many films being made today, Messiah and also the second installment were great viewing to keep you guessing and especially in the first, the reveal was something else. Pity the third one and onwards were dire!

is it such a good idea to have this as anything but a list. You may give away endings

Won't be a problem with spoiler tags so long as they are used.

    List threads = Bad times

    The Last Seduction
And probably the scariest one of all, Se7en.

    Three films with twists in them that I love are;

Fracture, staring Ryan Gosling & Anthony Hopkins; A man (Hopkins) discovers his wife is having an affair & he takes revenge by shooting her. It appears an open & shut case for the young hot-shot district attorney (Gosling) but all is not as it seems.

Inside Man, staring Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster & Willem Dafoe; A bank robbery turns into a hostage situation. A hostage negotiator (Washington) is called in to deal with the gang leader (Clive Owen), however, things do not follow the normal path with many people affected by the robbery & not just the hostages & police.

The Negotiator, staring Samuel Jackson & Kevin Spacey; A decorated hostage negotiator (Jackson) is suspected of murdering his partner & the only way he can prove his innocence is by taking hostages himself. A hostage negotiator (Spacey) from the another district is called in but other factors are at play.

Didn't want to put the twists in, otherwise I doubt anyone enjoy the film knowing the twist was coming.:)

I quite liked the one in the Salton Sea -

To be honest dude, by you even knowing there is gonna be a twist in a movie, that is just gonna take away from the experience of a movie as a whole!

Charade (1963) An international light comic thriller very much in the style of the "jet-set" era which turns pretty much the central plank of the story on its head with the big revelation/twist. If you've not seen it then its a delightful reveal and even if you know whats coming its still fun for being so well concealed.

    + 1 for Shutter Island

Also Identity with John Cusack and Primal Fear with Edward Norton who is fine form for his debut role

Basic, staring Samuel Jackson & John Travolta; A military training exercise goes terribly wrong & the army appoint a slick investigator (Travolta) to look into it. The training was organised by a legendary solider (Jackson) who is the troop's training officer. The investigation reveals a lot more is going in the barracks then people know about.

    Fraility

"A man confesses to an FBI agent his family's story of how his religious fanatic father's visions lead to a series of murders to destroy supposed "demons."

Both are great movies but I wouldn't say they have twists at the end.

Something a bit different - the 70s cult classic A Boy and his Dog

A very young Don Johnson explores a Mad Max-esque post-apocalyptic desert looking for food and women with his best pal, a telepathic dog.

With an ending guaranteed to make you spit out your beer and say "WTF!!??" :D

My personal favourite twist ending is in the granddaddy of all twist ending movies i.e. the brilliant 1968 'Planet of the Apes'. Of course the ending to that movie is so infamous that it has its own simpsons parody in 'Stop the Planet of the Apes...I want to get off'. How many other films can boast that!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 7,872 ✭✭✭strobe

My favourite twist of all time also happens to be in (possibly) my favourite film of all time, which was an adaption of one of my favourite books of all time {so yeah, I kinda liked it}. A Scanner Darkly: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0405296/.

"An undercover cop in a not-too-distant future becomes involved with a dangerous new drug and begins to lose his own identity as a result."

Great movie, there was always going to be a twist, it's that kind of movie. But it closes out by stacking three twists on top of each other, in a way that ties what was already a pretty twisty plot together brilliantly.
