PGDE NUI Maynooth - School distance

    Hi.

Im gonna be doing the PGDE in NUI Maynooth this september. On the link to a website given by nui maynooth, it says that schools should be within a 40 mile (~75km) radius of nui maynooth. Is this mandatory as a few of the schools i have applied to are outside this range (by about 10-20km - according to google maps).

Also, I would be interested in hearing from anyone who has chosen to do their pgde in a school that is quite a good distance away from nui maynooth and how they found getting to/from it twice the week?

    thanks.

    jm

I'm not in Maynooth, but my impression was that Maynooth students (some of whom are in my school) were in school two days a week and in college the other days - in other words travelling from school to get to college for a certain time did not apply in the case of that university.

I imagine the 40 radius criterion is there only so that supervisors do not have to go too far for supervisions. But I'd be surprised if NUI Maynooth would be too worried about a few extra miles. They probably wouldn't even be aware of it - unless of course they sent out an approved list of schools or something.

They are really strict on the 40 mile radius this year. I was accepted by a school that I have subbed in before to do my placement which was outside the 40 mile radius.
I didn't think it would be a problem as they have had dip students in the school from maynooth for the last umpteen years including 2009-2010 but the education department have told me that due to cutbacks the bursar is strictly enforcing the 40 mile radius for next September and I had to find another school within the 40 mile limit this year

Have you tried Navan schools? They are not too far away and I knew someone who did their placement there a couple of years ago. Maybe you could try Meath or even Drogheda is within the 75 KM limit. HTH:)

As if the whole PGDE thing isn't stressful enough without this now too.

    Hope you all get sorted!
