Trouble with diet/weightloss

    Hey,

So I'm 5'7 and about 12 stone 3 lbs. I want to get back down to 11 stone. I've been going to the gym although not steadily because things like college and work have been getting in the way. Although i've lost a few inches off my tummy and arms I haven't been losing weight and it's all down to my diet.

I am tremendously picky. I don't even mean to be it's like a thing in my head that tells me I don't like something so when I try it I immediately gag. And I usually give in to my cravings for junk. I feel really low in myself that I don't look good but I'm just not motivated even though I would love to have a flat tummy and stuff.

Anybody got any advice? Motivational tips?? I would really appriciate it!

It's nearly impossible to give advice as we have nothing to work with. Can you post up typical days diet? Also you need to make the gym a part of your life as going on and off is useless tbh! I was finding it difficult to make time previously as things kept cropping up in the evenings so now I get up an hour earlier and go before work

Hey sorry I didn't even realise I gave you nothing to go on.

Most days I will have 2 slices of brown toast for brekkie or a bowl of cheerios with low fat milk. For dinner I would usually have chips and peas/beans or potatoes and peas. I would usually give in and have some chocolate or crisps or something during the day and I nearly always give in and have some white bread aswell.

I have a very limited diet in terms of food. I have been a vegetarian for 15 years but I've been trying to eat abit of meat and after about a year and a half i've trained myself to eat sausages aswell so. I don't eat a lot of vegetables either. The other day I tried a veggie burger and although I thought it was horrible I didn't purge so I think it's something I could train myself to like..

Sorry for rambling here. A friend suggested I might have selective eating disorder which would place my pickyness, because I genuinely would love to eat a whole variety of foods and some foods smell delicious but I rarely ever get myself into a situation where I will be pressured into trying something. I don't go out to dinner etc. and when I am pressured I usually feel panicked and upset...

So thus, My dieting is not going well. And I am trying to now make the gym a 3 time a week thing it was genuinely my exams getting in the way of that.

Cheers for your help and sorry again for the long post

Boxed cereals apart from weetabix and porridge are bad news, same for white bread and chips! Did you read the nutrition stickies? It might be a good start and report back to us with a new proposed diet? I was going to post up a sample diet but I had a feeling you might give some excuse for not eating the foods listed?

Don't worry what your trying to do is achievable but you do need to exercise more and cut out the junk (cliche I know)

You state that purging is something you think you could train yousefl into?

This goes beyond the realm of advice here OP - id say go to your GP and discuss your feelings with him/her.

It's not normal to feel panicked around food.

think you mis read that man, but I do agree to a point

It sounds to me as though you have some pretty serious issues regarding food. I mean that in a helpful way, not as a criticism - but have you talked to your doctor about this? Your current diet seems to be lacking in protein and fats - can you eat cheese at all? How about eggs? Are you taking any supplements to make up for the lack of nutrients in your diet?

I had a friend, many years ago, who ate a diet similar to yours, and who also had problems eating 'in public' - he'd avoid going out for meals etc. I do understand that it's more than just being a picky eater - it's like a real fear of some foods.

As far as eating vegetables goes - have you thought of pureeing them and making soup? Carrot and coriander is lovely, leek and potato - that sort of thing. Do you eat butter?

I think you should begin by concentrating on eating a wider variety of foods - forget about losing weight for now, because that will only lead to more restriction - just continue to experiment with more foods - try them at home, where there's no pressure. How about buying a good vegetarian cookbook, and seeing what you can make? Rose Elliot has written some good ones.

Best of luck with this - food can be a real pleasure, but it can also be a nightmare when you have serious issues with it. Don't be afraid to ask for help, thinking that you're going to be 'forced' to do stuff outside your comfort zone - professionals are there to support you and help you make the right choices, not to make those choices for you.

Really wishing you all the best!

And I usually give in to my cravings for junk.

That's your starting point. Tackling anything else first would be like saving pennies while wasting pounds. Exercise, better diet - this won't help you if don't stop eating junk food.

Thanks for all the advice and support guys.
A girl I worked with suggested I see the doctor as I show similar symptoms to her son who has 'Selective Eating Disorder'...

I'll post back again when I see what the doc has to say!

    Thanks again
