I'm thinking of getting the iphone and I was just wondering, does it have wifi. If I go on Twitter, will my credit be taken or will it stay the same?
Also, do you need some sort of code to get into the iphone or something?

There is indeed wi-fi. It automatically connects when you have access to a wi-fi network, so all your data goes through that - this doesn't cost anything off your credit or mobile bill. When you don't have access to a wi-fi network, you obviously must connect through the mobile phone network, and charges may apply (depending on the plan you're on).

You can set a 4 digit password to access the iPhone, but you don't have to set this up if you don't want to. You can also set it that 10 incorrect attempts wipes all the data on it, as an extra security measure.

Its just the wireless internet you connect to.Its a network because more then 1 device can connect at once and can connect through each other through it with the correct setup/applications

ok, so if i'm in my home, it wouldn't take credit, but what about if I was like say in a shop, or outside, or in a school classroom? It wouldn't take my credit then, would it?

To sum it up in a very very simple way

To use wi-fi u have to be at home....like the way your laptop connects to the Internet at home. Once passed your house you'll have to use your credit

If there I free wifi network somewhere you can use that. Like McDonalds have free wifi. In a shop, school etc no u will have to use credit

Not even in a school classroom?
So, would it work in the car/school bus? It probs wouldn't, but just want to make sure!

No it will not work in your school or on the bus UNLESS your school has wifi internet which you can access....

Basically wifi is something you or someone has to pay for. Like your parents pay for the internet at home and you use it. It is not given for free.....

Like talking to my little sister.... *slams head against wall*

:D you will learn...iphone is the bomb btw

You won't have wi-fi in a car or school bus. It's been a long time since I was in a classroom, but I doubt many schools have a wi-fi network that you will be able to access.

To explain a bit more about wi-fi, it's basically a wireless way for devices like computers, iPhones, games consoles etc. to communicate with each other and with the internet. It only has a relatively short range (about 20 to 60 metres in practical terms), so you need to be within that range of an "access point" to be able to receive a signal. An access point allows a wifi network to connect to the internet. Each access point is separate, so the wi-fi network you have at home is completely separate from the one in your neighbour's house.

So, at home, you might have an internet connection through your phone line. This plugs into a wifi access point (most modern broadband modems have this feature built in), which in turn broadcasts a wi-fi signal, allowing connected devices to access the internet. You might need to enter a password to access the wi-fi network, but once you do, the iPhone will remember it for next time and connect automatically.

Many hotels, airports, offices and even pubs and restaurants (as someone mentioned, McDonalds) have wi-fi networks. Some are "open", meaning you or anyone can use it once you're in range. And some are "closed", meaning you need a password to access it. In some places, like hotels, you might need to pay for access. Other places, like offices, might have a wi-fi network, but it's not meant for public use at all.

So, if you have an iPhone, and you are within range of a wi-fi network that you can access, you will not pay anything out of your credit to access Twitter or the rest of the internet. Once you go outside of the range of such a network (as soon as you walk down the road from your house, for instance), you will no longer be connecting by wi-fi, and if you do access Twitter, etc, then you will be doing this over the mobile pone network and this will cost you credit. When you go to you'r mate's house, you can ask them for the password to connect to their wi-fi network, and it's free to Tweet away to your heart's content again.

Note, the above is a really, really, really simplified explanation, so I don't want any network admins pointing out that you can have an ad-hoc network with no access point, or that you can get 500 meter range by rigging a Pringles can to a wi-fi antenna. :p

If you don't know what Wifi is by now then I doubt you should get an iPhone... and even that's simple :p Only messing ;) But seriously, if you use your phone for JUST social networking there are plenty of other cheaper devices on the market, plus, Meteor have free internet (well, 250mb a month but its more than enough) and free meteor to meteor texts for just 20 euro a month. Not dissing the iPhone, it's brilliant, just doesn't make sense paying that amount if your only using it for the basics. Maybe i'm wrong, you could be using it for the games, music etc. Or just because it's an ''iPhone''

    Good luck!
