Players managers and referees betting on GAA games

I have noticed a worrying trend lately in local GAA where players, mentors and referees are betting on local GAA games where odds are available for their local games. The refs are betting on other games that they are not reffing. Players are betting on there own games and I for one would not be comfortable with. Is there any regulations about this in GAA like Soccer? If not should it be regulated? Anyone encounter same problem?

I'd have no issue with a team backing themselves to win a match or a tournament. At least they will be trying to still win I suppose but gambling is everywhere now. I doubt 10 years ago you would have seen a gambling company sponsoring a team whereas now Derry are sponsored by a well known betting firm.

I would be worried about Refs backing though.

    Why refs and not players??

Refs are ordinary club people as well, and some like to have a bet on games that they are not involved in, they have no say in what happens on the pitch. Players on the other hand should not be betting on any game that they are involved in imo

At the very least there should be some rules on this but I can't remember ever hearing of any.

You'd think with Oisin McConville's well documented problems that there would be some sort of rules in place by now.

I do remember hearing a story about how some UCC team stung the bookies for a few quid when they were in the Cork County Final a few years back.

I don't think theyre putting down big money or else the bookies would bring attention to it. It's not like international sports, only local bookies would be giving odds, anything irregular would stand out like a sore thumb.

I fail to see how betting on yourself to win is unethical/dodgy etc.

Surely the aim of most (outside of soccer teams playing for a draw) teams/competitors is to win.

As for Oisin McConville's problems. He had a gambling problem, betting all he had on horses mainly. Not sure how that effects any match he plays in.

Oisin McConville brought this up in his autobiography. He placed bets but he never placed bets in games he was playing in himself

Well you could have some ref that might have had a bet against a team earlier on in the Competition and then he gets to ref a game of theirs later in the championship and then proceeds to screw the living daylights out of them, sure thats human nature:D(I know this is actually quite far fetched but not beyond the realms of possibility)

Would take a very dim view on any ref placing any bet on any game.

nonsense. there is absolutely nothing wrong with backing yourself to win. if you think there is a problem with that well then you have a problem with the notion of gambling as a whole.

Not surprised Refs put bets on matches there in charge of, especially for matches when a so called weaker county plays a stronger team, decisions they give are unbelievable at times, stronger counties are always given the decisions, its shocking to watch and disheartening for teams trying to improve.

I'd like the OP to be a bit more specific. Really if refs are placing bets would like to see evidence of it.

How is the op gonna do that, collect torn up betting slips?? :D

In all seriousness you can put a bet on whether your first born will wear their county colours why not bet on a match? Now i am not a gambling man have never put a bet on in a bookies in my life (bar my da askin me each grand national to pick a horse but the whole family picked one)

As long as there are no sinister reasons (match fixing for example) then let them do whatever bet they like, this thread reminds me of an advert for the soccer pools in england, a ref had a team to win by a clear goal so he headed the ball in the back of the oppositions net to win :)
