Wasn't sure what forum to put this in...

I'm in my mid 20's and seem to be getting arthiritis in my hips. I play football and have been to a physio who has told me this. He has tried to give me advise to manage it so I can keep playing, but this is not working. He has also said most people would tell me to stop, with the way my hips are.

Basically, Im looking to see if anyone else has a similar problem or would have any advice on who to see etc. Not looking for specific medical advice just what road to go down.

Cant afford to keep going back to the physio when he cant do anything to fix it.

Chat your GP and see about getting a referral to a specialist. My cousin was in the same boat as yourself only his started at about 9 or 10.IIRC he attended a type of clinic in Manorhamilton for treatment and that worked well for him but like any ailment, its better to have a chat with your GP first of all because it effects different folks differently.

Best of luck anyway, its not a nice affliction to have.

I have arthritis in my knees and elbows, I'm 28, got it last year, its manageable but cold weather is a bitch, prepare for sore mornings once winter hits. Depending on what medication if any you'll be on (I take 2 tablets a day and fortnightly self inject) its not the end of the world, sitting or standing for long periods can be a pain, but its manageable like I said.

You should go to a specialist and get x-rays and MRIs to see how bad the damage is and to see if you will need new hips if you keep up the football. Only this will tell you how bad they are and this goes a long way to your treatment.

In my opinion, physiotherapy for this is useless. You need to be aware of your body and how to control this.

I got osteo-arthritis in both of my hips in my mid 20s as well. It was a major shock at first as I was extremely active sports wise and took my training very seriously and I had to cut it cold turkey or else I was to get 2 new hips within a year. I hope it is osteo and not rheumatoid you have as it is the lesser of the two.

The issue you have sounds very similar to me in that if you do any "pounding" sports it hurts afterwards e.g. running, football, jumping etc. whereby the downward force of your bodyweight is damaging your hips. I had to stop my activities and I had to give up a sport I loved (that hurt like hell and I felt like I had lost part of me) so I decided to learn about my own body again and to see what I can or cannot do.

Keeping a diary of when I was in pain and what I was doing prior to it helps, for example, if you sit down and cross your legs by placing your foot/ankle on the opposite knee to relax, do you find it sore after a while?

I now only do sports that don't have any impact on my hips e.g. cycling, swimming, circuit training etc. It is a change in my life, but I do like it even though I am not competitive anymore. Having said that, I do treat myself to the odd game of football, but I will suffer for a few days afterwards.

The other thing you will find is that alcohol, especially after a good session will dry out your joints i.e. dehydration so ensure you drink plenty of water to stop the pain. Eat plenty of fish and look after your diet as you will be surprised how this helps. I cannot stress to you how much hydration helps you.

Do you hurt straight after a game or do you feel it a few days later and does it affect your lower back or knees? If it does, then you're going to have to make a life-change and quick. I don't mean to scare you, but do you want to stay active and get new hips or stay active and keep what you have?

    Hi OP,
That is a bitch and quite unusual for someone so young. Do as a previous poster has said and get all the scans done. Also may be worthwhile starting to introduce some lifestyle changes.

Pilates/Yoga to balance your body and try and make sure that your muscles are strong around your core so that your hips aren't doing too much work

Nutrition. Visit a nutritionist and get advice on any supplements or food types that may help. This will help in the long-term and will need to be done from now on.

don't over do it on the exercise but no reason why you can't keep playing soccer,

Blah, I sat down on the sofa one night and I couldnt get up, i was in so much pain when i moved my hips and there was no will power ..managed to crawl into a lieing down position, waited 20 minutes I still couldnt get up, called 999 and they took me to Temple Street

Im being tested for juvenile arthritis atm
If you think you got it at a young age..I'm 15 :(
I have no idea whats going, they did X rays and they were normal tested for inflammation and that was normal too. The doctor still hasnt ruled it out
I've to take Nurofen when required while waiting 4 weeks for some tests..autoimmune system and rf factor or something..
