What's a good laptop to buy?

Looking for something with a big hard-drive, fast processor, lots of RAM, for as cheap as possible, my own laptop is on the way out.

I'm not a mad tech head so wouldn't know where to start, would I be better buying on the like of ebay or in shops in town.

Can someone explain what different processors are all about?

    Thanks in advance.:D

    What's your budget?
And what is this laptop going to be used for?

Mainly downloading, converting and burning movies and music. General internet usage. And a bit of music production hopefully in the future.

Budget of around the 400-500 range.

WELL you can buy a dual core ,2 cpu 2.0ghz 2gig ram dvdrw 15inch lcd laptop around 450 in
pcworld or currys , peats. The cpu dual core means the pc can do many things at the same time, ie burn a dvd, play mp3s, surf the web.OR buy one from dell.ie .Make sure screen is matte, ie not glossy .
THE cpu, core is like the engine in a car dual, or core duo = 2cpu s = twice the speed.
I just use a pentium 4 1.4ghz cpu single core .I like it cos its completely silent.Windows 7 is designed for faster cpus,eg 2.oghz speed ,it would not run well on a 1ghz cpu.
i,d recommend the inspiron 15 on the dell ireland website,it has hardrive 250gb,dual core cpu,15inch screen widescreen, 439 euro.

you can, but they wont run games as well (or at all) as the xps, nor will they have better than full hd resolution panels. so you should compare like for like

    but whatever floats your boat
