Helmet cams?

I know there was a few threads about this before, non of which i've searched long enough to find, but i'm just wondering what helmet/gun cams people use, if any.

And i've gone through one or two of those cheap supposedly good ones, but they're not, and i'm sick of them.
So what decent tried and trusted cams do people use, and where'd you get them, if you don't mind me asking.

    Cheers!

I have an Oregon Scientific one and it'll take a beating alright, but is a little heavy and you certainly need to wear a helmet (I'm not convinced by gun-cams, helmet-mounted footage looks much better and more interesting). It seems to guzzle batteries; need to experiment further.

By the way that lady has no arms! That must be why she needs a helmet-cam.

Have been looking for a helmet cam for some time and the upcoming trip to senny made me take some action on this front

got luck and picked up a second hand contourhd 1080, from a guy on eBay who got it to record rides and never used it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,778 ✭✭✭Sod'o swords

Yeah after looking at both helmet and gun cam footage, i think it's safe to say looking at the ground for 50% of the time isn't all that interesting, so it'll be a helmet cam.

I just need to get a decent helmet that can have the camera mounted, securely. I have a run of the mill helmet, but i'm not duck taping a 120€ camera to my head..

Anyone have any suggestions on helmet to get?

I went down the line of the contour HD the 720 version.
So far I have had very mixed results. Like any of these small cameras they do not like dull conditions so in dense forrest results can be hit and miss. I have tried using both HD and SD mode, and HD is worth the extra space requirements. One of the down sides of these, and I'm not sure on the specs of the helmet came, is the wide angled lens. You need to get close to the action to get anything of value.
Luckily enough the contour comes with lots of mountings, and out of the packaging I was able to make an additional RIS mount, quick release one at that  So I get best of both worlds, Helmet and Gun cam..
Another nice feature is if you break the lens on these, it's replaceable... You can buy replacement packs.. So don't worry about those BBs whizzing by...

For a helmet, looking at he helmet cam it has a hight centre of gravity, so stay away from the likes of the M88's they will move around way too much.. I'd suggest a foam insert helmet would be the best..
    Something like : http://www.ebairsoft.com/mich-2000-helmet-with-dummy-sopmod-mount-p-2740.html

Video samples: Filter by my name to see the rest...

    Hope this is useful..

always a balancing act with these little cameras but if i wanted great framing and close ups i would not be using a helmet cam in the first place :)

small test video of the contour hd, in and count of rooms with switchs of lighting ( hd option included )

do not use a helmet myself but used elastic made into a lop can be used on its own or running round the inside of a watchcap, makes a nice stable platform

Tbh that Quality is more than enough really.
That setup you have is interesting enough though, i'm not a huge fan of Helmets, only considering one because i was thinking it would be the most stable and secure setup. Suppose i'll play around with different mounts and such.

Why not a shoulder mount? a strip of aluminum bend to a U shape and feed into a molle style vest, camera bolted to aluminum???

please excuse the basic drawing, hopefully you get the idea

problem with that is a vest moves a lot and all of this would be transferred to the camera itself, you naturally keep your head steady self stabilization as it where, your torso/shoulder are constantly in motion when moving

include i gyroscopic stabilizer into build and for long range video dont forget Coriolis effect damper.... :D

i think the shoulder mount used in conjunction with a helmet mount and AEG mount and some good editing would lead to a great visual experience....

my 2 cents (worth about 4 cents to my friends)

I have just got hold of a GoPro Hero ( www.goprocamera.com )from the lads in Gotac in Bray (they sell em). This thing is amazing. I have set it up as a gun cam for this week end and you will find the videos uploaded early next week. It will give you an idea of its potential. So far with limited tests in the back garden I have been mega impressed.
Will be back shortly with the results ;)

look forward to seeing the results, was looking at the gopro myself ( what model is it? ) but went with the contour in the end, specs where very similar but mounting options seemed easier with the contour as i wanted to have to head mounted over aeg mounted, how did you end up mounting it to the aeg?

should have some test footage from the contour this weekend as well will be nice to compare

Pete in Gotac made a gucci gun mount :D The model I have is the motor-sport. Gotac have been kind to lend me this to evaluate it before I buy one. I will go for the Helmet-cam one in HD. It also comes with a head band similar to ones on a led torch. This way I will be able to mount it in different positions to get different views.

Ive seen the met police are using a similar camera and they chose to mount it on the shoulder instead of on the head. the chap said it was a lot more stable. rarely will you be eyes forward in the same direction as the camera, so you'll often find the camera is recording a load of useless video, much like a gun cam.

I think i remember shane using one in HRTA, and ended up with loads of video of the grass. lol

never seen that myself but its interesting do you have any more information? seen the seen a lot of head mounted camera used by police in the uk to record conversation and arrests in case there needed in court

but have to agree seen equally as much good helmet cam fotage as bad, same with gun camera footage the quality can very greatly

i know what your saying about people not turning there head, i find thought that i do turn my head as i always wear glasses so my peripheral vision is of little to know use, no have to turn my head :)

i do not think there is any ideal solution all have there ups and downs

The secret to filming good footage is to take lots of it so that you can edit it properly so you keep the 'grass' shots to a minimum.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,261 ✭✭✭Puding

had a look around, was able to find a little bit of information on them, example:

    http://www.newtownabbeytoday.co.uk/Register.aspx?ReturnURL=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.newtownabbeytoday.co.uk%2Fnews%2FCOPS-WITH-CAMERAS.5544715.jp

they seem to be more tailored for the interview style videos rather than recording action, but worth a try

    real work helmet footage

airsoft footage helmet mount from the mall

trick with any digital media :) take loads of photos or video and sort thought it at a later date rather than trying to get that one perfect picture, its my i love my digital slr, i would say for every picture i use i must throw out at least 10 or more
