Bakers Cyst

    Hi,
I've had a sore knee for about a month now, thought it was my IT band and did loads of work on getting if rubbed out etc, ran Limerick Marathon last week and then today I discovered a swelling at the back of my knee, went to the doctor - who was useless - she hardly looked at my knee and told me to rest, she said it looked like a bakers cyst and of course I came home and googled and now I'm totally freaked out, has anybody had this and what happened? The doctor mentioned nothing about any underlying cause and didnt say where to go with it or what to do, if anyone has any advice it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks a million.

    Hi There

If the GP did nor really examine you, then I would take any diagnosis with a pinch of salt to be honest. I was once diagnosed with scabies when in actual fact I was suffering with dry skin, by a similarly disinterested doctor. Though the hint was that I was the 6th person she had seen that day who had scabies.

It's time for a second opinion I'm afraid, from a qualified person either another GP who is familiar with sports injuries or a good physio.

If you are living in Dublin, then I can suggest the following

    • Ciaran Fitzpartrick (Physio) based in Dundrum. He has worked on many of the Irish Olympic athletes, so is used to running injuries and IMHO is very good.
    • Brian Thomas (Physio & PT) based in Dun Laoghaire (near Royal Marine Hotel). Again IMHO a really good physio.
I have used both of these guys and have recommended them to friends and have always heard positive feedback.

I would advise against self diagnosis via Google or seeking a diagnosis from strangers (armchair doctors) on the Internet, as you can end up being led down the wrong path and make matters worse.

    Best Regards,

    M
