Very interested in one of these, planning on buying a relatively big engined car and at my age the insurers ain't gonna be very happy when they see that:D.

I've heard that you can do these and you get a discount on your insurance as well(I'd also like to be as good a driver as possible especially with the poor standard of driving on our roads).

I'm just looking for general advice really, like how much do they cost, has anyone in Cork done one of them and how did you find it and will they save any money on insurance?

I'd also be interested in this, I've never once been advised by Quinn-Direct to do some advanced driving courses. I must admit, I haven't heard about anything like that apart from the Hibernian ignition course.

But of course, that's not worth a ****e if you drive anything over 1.6 as I believe you must not drive a bigger engine car than that.

I've done both the IAM course and the Ignition Course.
When I did the IAM, Hibernian were the only ones to recognise it and Quinn were still cheaper even after the discount was applied by Hibernian.
Later I did the Ignition course which got me 30% discount with Hibernian as I passed with Distinction.

I think they cost somewhere around €200 but I can't really remember.

They are worth doing from a drivers point of view but I didn't benefit very much from it finacially.
Ask your insurance company if they will offer discount if you do the course. Ask how much discount, find out the current cost of the course and then do some maths.

Has anyone else had experience them?
I'm hoping to do one over the Summer so I can cut down as much as I can before college.

A pity that not many insurance companies seem to recognise them.

I did it about 8 years ago, AFAIK Aviva are still the only ins co to give a discount for it.

The course is well worth doing.
I did the advanced driving course in the UK, redo it every 3 years.
Apart from the deductions on your insurance pemiums, it makes you more aware on the road, which can't be bad in this country which is populated by idiot drivers.

Anyone have any suggestions for advanced driving courses one can do?

I'm a bit away from Dublin but would be able to do one in Cork/Waterford area.

I think I had to do mine in Waterford at the time. Here's a link to the Irish IAM: http://www.iami.ie/

Id be interested in doing one but dont expect it to lower insurance costs as most companies Ive spoken with dont give a hoot what courses youve done.

I'm not too worried about changes to my insurance premium. I wouldn't mind the extra skills on the road however. Just to for my own safety, if anything.

EDIT: I look through the IAMI site and can't see anything about where I can apply to do a course. Does anyone have any links or names/contact numbers for instructors/courses?

    Thanks!

I have dine a couple of them for both on & off road (for work) & they are worth doing as it can be like a mini re-test in a way.
NiFast do one here in Cork (and other parts of the country) but I know Aviva did not recognize that one, I think that apart from their own one Ignition they only recognize the IAM one.
They are normally called " Defensive driving" courses too.
I would really like to try the Garda/UK police one though, far more interesting!
