The League and Cup Double

is on for Chelsea, and who would bet against them! This, assuming they win it, will be the 11th League and FA Cup double in the history of the game in England.

Only five were won in the 100-odd years before the foundation of the Premier League, and five in the last 20 years. Is this not a true measure of the competitiveness, or lack thereof, of the EPL? That competition has been destroyed in England by the influx of TV money?

The Double used to be a rarity, a sign of true greatness in a team, at a time when there were fewer European distractions than now, poorer pitches. Now it is almost "so what"! Such is the dilution of relative quality that a club now has to win a quadruple at least to stand out.

I think its more a case that the CL has gained such prominence and English clubs now challenge so regularly for it that nowadays "The Double" would be seen as winning the title and the CL. The FA Cup has been devalued somewhat and is seen as a great cup to win, but a bonus nonetheless, rather than something clubs set out to win every year.
