We have american family friends visiting for another week. Where should I take them around Limerick? Short drives are ok. I was thinking as a lil road trip to do the rock of cashel and charleville castle in one day, they saw the castle on a drive and wanted to go back. We have already done lahinch and the cliffs. We are wandering around Limerick city after brekkie in the wild onion on Monday. Was thinking bunratty later.
    So whatcha think? :)

    Glenstall Abbey

Clare Glens if the weather is any good

There are some great places I pass a lot on the way to other cities that I've never stopped to look at, especially on the Limerick/Galway N18.

Yes they are and it is great. Take a trip to Kilaloe, Lough Gur, Bunratty, King John's Castle.

Take them to the Burren, head to Ballyvaughan from Corrofin at Leamaneh Castle, you could stop at Caherconnell Stone Fort (small fee), just up the raod is probaly one of the most famous dolmens - Poulnabrone. Once you get to Ballyvaughan you can enjoy the town and head home by the coast road via Fanore.

Get up early and drive to Foynes. Get there for a little after 10am and go to the Flying Boat Museum. Dazzle your guests with the news that the grandfather of Kess73 has his photo in that museum and that he was involved with transatlantic flights ( True fact #1:))

Maybe grab breakfast in Foynes and then head for Tarbert.

In Tarbert go to Tarbert Gaol, and do the tour of it. It is small and won't take more than 45 minutes.

Then go to the Ferry and go across to Kilimer. Making sure to have the cameras ready during the crossing to get a few snaps of the many bottlenose dolphins that live in the estuary. You can tell your guests that the estuary is home to the largest resident pod of bottlenose dolphin anywhere in Europe (true fact #2:))

Now make your way through Kilrush to the Moyasta junction. (drive towards Kilkee from Kilrush)

There you can take your guests for a trip on the West Clare Railway. It is a small steam engine that does short tours and has a little museum and cafe.

Then go for a stroll around Kilkee and dinner/tea there. Drove there yesterday to drop someone off and it looks lovely at the moment without the throngs of people that infest the place from June onwards.

Finish the day by driving home from Kilkee through Ennis and onwards to Limerick.

A detour up Knockpatrick just outside Foynes would also be recommended if the weather is good. You can drive all the way to the graveyard at the top and the views are fantastic.

The gates are often locked now on days when there are no funerals, so driving to the top is not always an option.

Great view there on a clear day though and from parts of the Kerry Hill road there are nice views too, and the back road between Foynes and Shanagolden that comes out at Corrig in Foynes has some nice views, not a great road for those that don't know it though.

Oh right, it's been a few years since I was out there. They probably wouldn't fancy the trek up the hill so.

Was last at the graveyard a few months back and it was more suitable for a 4X4 than a car now. The top bit is still concrete and fine for turning a vehicle around on, but the first few hundred yards from the gate is very rough and if there is any wet it becomes like a swamp.
