How much should TDs be paid?

As the thread asks how much do people here think TDs should get paid? An awful lot of people seem to think that their wages should be cut substantially. Some think they should get the average industrial wage. As well as this the same people often bemoan the quality of people working as public representatives. Take Brian Lenihan for example, a very bright and talented man. Before he became a minister, he could have been earning much more outside the Dáil as a barrister, or even George Lee, who was on more money in RTÉ. So where does the balance lie? Are we willing to pay peanuts for peanuts, or are we willing to pay for the best and the brightest and the rates they demand?
