Done a marathon, can anyone who has done both gaelforce and marathons compare the two in terms of training required, fitness, effect on the body, recovery reqd etc. Thanks

Ive done one marathon and one adventure race (WAR). While I could get up and complete another AR tomorrow, I wouldnt attempt a marathon without training. In terms of the toll on your legs and joints, and physically keeping going, a marathon needs a lot of preparation. An AR requires high fitness, but the mix of bike/run/kayak means it is easier for your body to keep going, imo, and you could theoretically do it with just a good base fitness.

I was sore after the marathon, a bit stiff, but after war I couldnt walk at all for two days. I thought I had prepared well, and got through it, but the aftermath showed how much it took out of me. Buckled was the word I used. I wasnt half as bad after the marathon, but I had done a full 18 week training plan for that.

So I think ideally both need quite a high level of preparation and training. The marathon training is specific to a particular task of running for an extended time, whereas AR training you need more all round endurance and strength. You will be carrying more kit, and taking more knocks during the technical runs in an AR, and youll need to be used to hills on a bike, or your quads will not be able and your calves will cramp continually.

I thought the AR was one of the toughest things I ever did. It feels completely different to a marathon, which is ok to do if the prep is done beforehand. Tho if your strong on a bike anyway, you should manage something like GF pretty well, as thats the bit that you really need to have cracked.
