I have had my NTL digibox for about 6 months but from time to time it seems to cut off the end of films and shows? Has anybody had this problem? Is there anyway to prevent it?

Its very annoying to lose the last minute of a film!!

There is a setting in the menu to begin and finish the recording of any program by up to 10 mins each side extra or so..thats what i use,and it cuts out missing ends of movies etc..
    its at MENU->DIGITAL VIDEO RECORDER->SETTINGS
    hope that helps

Word of warning is that if you schedule two programmes that are in exact sequence, with overrecording enabled, they'll count as conflicting.

i.e.: With 5 minutes extra recording on the end, a program from 20:00-20:30, will count as conflicting with one from 20:30-21:00.

I've noticed with the HD box that if i schedule 2 programs to record one after the other (same channel), when i view the second program i can see that the end of the previous program is also recorded e.g. the end credits. no conflict in this case & no extra record time set.

I think it depends on the channel involved. I think it happens sometimes on Sky as well.

yeah its not really the boxes fault its the programmes running over their time.. like if a programme is scheduled for 9-10.. but it doesn't start till 5 past and runs on till 10.05 your gonna miss the end of the programme not much upc can do about it really...

I know in the US the Tivo and the like use the "Broadcast Flag" to know when one program starts and ends.

Why can;t the NTL box do the same.

I though Sky adjusts this? If so why not NTL?

Used to be able to do it using PDC & Videoplus on some of the NTL analog channels on my VCR.

That is not what the Broadcast Flag is at all, it is for copy control: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Broadcast_flag

I don't know how they deal with programmes overrunning, maybe the US TV networks just adhere to schedules more strictly, or there is some other indication in the ATSC system.

From my experience, PDC stopped programmes from recording at all. However I don't know if broadcasters implemented it in a less broken way in future years.

PDC Worked fine for me on NTL analog. But it was only on a few UK stations.

The only problem I had that when it was turned on, you could only set up 2 or three time slots.

The nature of the US Network-Affiliate model probably does result in stricter schedule adherence since affiliates need to know when exactly a program will start.

I noticed that my recording of the Eurovision last night, was bang-on at the exact start of the program. Since it uses a Network-Affiliate type system too, could be why US broadcasting would have a stricter policy of adherence.
