Just a reminder to say that this is on at Royal Dublin this weekend. Started today and runs until Sunday. Well worth a watch for golfers of all levels. No ropes so you can get up close too.

    FROM THE GUI WEBSITE

Jeff Hopkins (Skerries) fired a superb one under par 71 to lead the way after the opening round of the AIB sponsored Irish Amateur Open Championship at the Royal Dublin Golf Club.

The stiff north easterly wind which howled over the links all day made for an extremely testing outward nine which Hopkins managed to cover in an impressive one-over-par 36. Birdies on the 10th, 13th and 14th holes followed by a bogey on the 15th made up the homeward nine of 35. Hopkins turned 18 in January but still qualifies to play at boys level and will take part in an Irish Boys trial at Druid's Glen and Powerscourt Golf Clubs next weekend.

He leads by one from Galgorm Castle's David Kernohan - who matched Hopkins in reaching the quarter-finals of the West of Ireland Championship last month. The beaten finalist in that Championship, Eddie McCormack (Galway) lies in a group of four players one stroke further back on 73.

    First Round Scores:

Caddied for one of my mates today, conditions pretty tough. Great golf by Jeff Hopkins. Saw him up close over two days at the west, haven't seen effortless power like he has in a long time. Only just gone 18 years old and definitely one to watch over the next couple of years.

I'll be out over the next two days for a look. Considering some of the scores that was very impressive. It was windy there today but it could be a lot worse.

Could have been alot worse, greens quickened late in the day and the wind played havoc on a couple of dodgy pins. The wind was pretty bad at times though, saw several knockdowns by good players and more than a few OB's. Some great displays of ball striking and shortgame on show though.

If the weather persists the greens will be super fast by sunday.

As a hacker myself its wonderful to watch some of these guys in the flesh, such natural talent.

How would you rate Royal Dublin as a test, in comparison to some of its neighbours?

Wind blowing, it's a beast at nearly 7300 yards. Prevailing wind is into the front 9 so it's all about survival. Hit the 10th and if the drivers working there's some real chances on the back nine to make some birdies.

As today's scores show it's not for anyone other than a good ballstriker off the championship tees.

F22 were you cadding out there today, if so what was the conditions like? I was on a dublin parkland and man was it windy, on bull island it must have been something else?!!

I went and watched for a while today, Brutal. I don't know what the leaders scored but watch a few lads tee off at about 1pm so mid pack and they were finding it hard think one lad was 60 yards short on the first after driver 3 wood, then took another 5 to get down maybe 4 it was brutal, and think the balls were starting to move on the greens. Saying that the back nine, the longer 9 was mostly down wind, but still the issues on the greens. The rough wasn't as long as I thought it would be though, I wonder if they trimmed it with the forecast for wind?

Wasn't there today Jimjo, was playing myself. Conditions as bad as yesterday if not slightly worse. 73 73 is fantastic scoring in that wind.

My moneys on Dunbar tomorrow though.
