    Hi,
Received order confirmation for new 520d.
As well as euro 850 BMW delivery charge, it lists dealer "delivery package" at euro 348.56.
I never heard of this before and was wondering if anybody else came across it.
There is no mention of what it includes. Should I query it?

Anything you have to pay you should query. Ask for a breakdown of costs. Im sure other boardsies would know more.

I assume it's for PDI, plates, etc. I assume you did your deal on the basis of the on-the-road price?

Lovely car, Be very careful where you park it. The amount to vandelism to new, especially luxury cars thesedays is alarming! I have seen Merc's and BMW's keyed and with broken wing mirrors a lot parked around town!

I presume it covers prepping the car for collection which would include things like number plates, floor mats and basic checks to make sure there is nothing wrong with it.

Definately query any costs you are not certain of though.

This happened to me before Christmas when I clearly stated to the salesguy that I wanted the cost to change. So we bargined for a few days and we agreed on a figure. As it was a company car I asked for an official quotation and included on it was two additional items SATNAV disk €350 and delivery charge of €350. I queried these and was told that "we have to put plates on it, clean it, put mats in and fill it with fuel". Told him to forget the whole thing and walked away only 2 days later he called me to tell that he would still sell me the car for the agreed price and forgot about the other two charges. The whole episose left such a sour taste in my mouth that I said "Forget about it".

The car - BMW 320D Premium

Congrats on new car. On Dealer pack most definitely query it, I did and got the following response, its a couple of years ago, and I don't remember what I got as the 'starter pack' certainly not oil nor a full tank of fuel
    Dear Mr XYZ

Thank you for your email regarding the BMW Starter Packs.

We can confirm that the starter pack generally comprises of the following:
    Set of Floor Mats
    Full Tank of Fuel
Cleaning Kit (comprising of wheel cleaner, polish, wax etc)
    1 Litre of Oil
The cost for the Starter Pack can vary between €220-€300 depending on the vehicle specification and dealership.

We trust this will be of assistance, however if you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

    Yours sincerely

dealer pack... sounds like a rip off pack if you ask me....
same as delivery charges.... considering how much it actually costs them to have the vehicle PDI and delivered from the docks to the garage...

In the case of some vehicles,

    1. Take mats from boot and put them in
    2. Put on centre caps onto Alloys
    3. Take off white metal covering(stops scratching during delivery)
    4. Wash it(its already clean on the inside)
    5. Put on number plates, surrounds and sticker on back window(i'd personally remove sticker and surrounds)
    6. Put fuel in tank. Never heard of this before
    7. Change language on internal computer / dash

    €80 at most excluding fuel.

I thought that the 850 euro delivery charge would include all that was to be done to car before I pick it up. On the BMW website they refer to it as the "on the road" price when the 850 is added.
Definitely think I will have to challenge this.

If the bottom line price is as agreed then where's the problem. It's like buying a TV and there's a producer recycling fund price on the receipt.

A long time ago, Delivery and Related Charges used to be 1200 on a BMW. Then BMW wanted it to be transparent, so the buyer knew which charges were from the Distributor, and which from the Dealer. Hence Delivery is now 850, and the additional 'related charges' 350 is coming from the Dealer's end. Starter Pack varies from Dealer to Dealer, some put the minimum in, some throw in nice goodies.

I always wondered how these charges were legal - delivery, plates etc are fundamental parts of the cost of a new car, surely they should be part of the sticker price? Even ryanair can semi-truthfully claim that their hidden charges are avoidable. Can you collect your car from munich to avoid the "delivery and related" charges?

<turns up to take delivery of new car> Oh, you need a key? That'll be an extra €2000 please!

I'd be asking them NOT to wash it if it were me.

Seems a bit of a cheap to have two delivery related charges.

Best of luck with the new car :)

Does anyone know if it is possible to collect your new BMW from Germany and avoid the costs, it would be great fun driving back in your new car and would cost a lot less than 850?

Yes but these costs should be expected by the dealer for every new car sold, did they expect the car to arrive from bavaria in an A4 envelope, plated and ready for handover?

There is more to it than Berty pointed out, but not enough to warrant the BMW dealers additional €350 quid.

It depends on the car for the lenghth of time, but there is an inspection (PDI) that takes up space in a service bay (24hrs on a Q7). The dealer also gets charged by the importer / manufacturer for the transport from port to dealership - and that seems to cost more than it would if they arranged it themselves.

We don't pay the additional €350 for the BMW's. Most models now come with mats as standard from factory, so in reality you are paying for a litre of oil, €20 of fuel and a couple of cleaning products. Refuse to pay the additional and forgo the oil and cleaning products. The €850 standard charge (which we do pay, and it's the most we pay any manufacturer) covers all listed in Berty's post and leaves you with enough fuel to get to the nearest fuel station.

That would annoy the hell out of me, if I ever buy a new car, getting charged €xxx to give the garage advertising.

If they are putting their stickers and surrounds onto my car then they should be paying me not the other way around, or at least doing it for free.

I have always taken them off anyway, I dont like advertising either and some people, like the county location, can be very snobbish about where you bought your car.

I have a munster rugby supporters club sticker in the drawer waiting for my new car which will replace the sticker that will be on the window. If there is a surround, 30 seconds each plate will cure that.

    a) As others have advised I'd query what the cost relates to - thereafter it'll be down to your negotiation skills..

    b) doesn't this query highlight the broader issue of the way cars are priced (in Ireland anyway - not sure about elsewhere) - surely in this age of 'transparency', we should be getting an 'on the road' price at all times and cut out all this nonsense of adding on bits and pieces here and there...

    c) pubs for example are obliged to display prices for drink - they wouldn't get away with saying to the punter "well the Guinness is Ex but if you want it in a glass it will be Ex+"

    Regulation required methinks.... ;)

I've never heard of it, and never paid it when buying a BMW.

Like ROR, I pay the standard 850 charge - which includes mats, quarter tank of fuel, and PDI.

    I wouldnt pay it.

Yes, this is not only possible, but a regular occurence with American customers.

Your dealer will have to arrange it for you though. You will pick it up in Munich, and be issued with temporary plates.

Some people have tried taking their cars to the Nurburgring and have had mixed results re. the plates.

It will also be on the only time most people will get to drive their cars to the max legally (but be wary of the break-in procedure for a new car).

    ^ interesting

I had also heard it was possible to buy a new BMW and then travel to the factory and watch it being built, or at least, watch the manufacturing process at certain stages.

Yes I have collected a car from the factory in Munich and drove it back (though it was a good while later as I was working abroad) They still charge you though for a PDI and taking that into account with fuel and tolls as well as flights, ferrys and accomodation/food you won't have a massive amount of change out of €850. Great experience though! Also given that the car will be brand new you won't want to be driving to the max on those unrestricted roads.
