Looking for ideas on where to head for good locations to capture a decent Sunrise or Sunset in about an hours drive from Limerick.

Edited Title as some may have thought the thread contained photos as opposed to a query.:o

Kilrush/Kilkee just over an hour from Limerick for sunsets or even closer Lough Derg for sunrises and sunsets depending on what side of the river your on.

Hard to beat the Cliffs Of Moher at sunset, or the West Limerick hills around Rooskagh at sunrise, or even Knockfeirna near Ballingarry Co Limerick for either. The lower Shannon Estuary is great when the sun sets over the water, and Grange Stone Circle near Lough Gur is good for sunrises. You could also drive up the Slieve Felim Hills near Murroe.

Any of the castles and ruined churches in the area could become interesting with warm early-morning light on them, if you like that kind of subject.

If you get really serious about this, when you visit a location at any time, decide where the best position for the sun would be, using a small cheap compass that you can get in any camping shop. Then go here: http://aa.usno.navy.mil/data/docs/AltAz.php and work out what day and time the sun will be exactly where you want it to be. That's what serious pro architectural photographers do, and they estimate two years for each project, in case it is cloudy the first day.

You could also look at books by Galen Rowell and Lee Frost for tips on low-light photography, and you'll need neutral-density graduated filters at some stage too.

Guys thanks for your help, think I'll try the stone circle in Grange and Lough Gur some morning wouldn't mind Knockfeirna too.

Oklahoma would be a tad too far.;)

Check out this free software for getting the direction of sunrise or sunsets. Saw it on here a while ago, great tool!
