Help, gearbox gone in 03 Avensis

Hi, OH just rang me to tell me the gearbox is gone in his automatic 03 Avensis.

Do any of you know where he'll source one and approx how much it would cost to replace (parts and labour)? He's calling a few of his pals to see if they know or can do anything,I just thought I'd ask you guys too!!

How bad is it, i.e, does it have any working gears, are there any dashboard lights etc?

Get a diagnostic done first and see what's actually wrong with it.

Auto Avensis's are very rare, so you may be looking at getting parts from the UK.
First things first though, it may not be as bad as it sounds.

All gears are working bar the reverse. Sounds like it's still in neutral when he puts it in reverse, ie. it's not kicking into gear.

He thinks the gearbox is electronic???

Any more opinions....thanks!

Is the fluid level correct? Has the ATF filter been changed? Are there any leaks? Get him to check this stuff and if that's all ok then the 'box is probably knackered. Not many of them around either.

Does the dashboard display say it's in reverse and is the reversing light coming on?
