Hey Kincaid we have one of these tractors ourselves not really what you would call a bad tractor but just not that user friendly. We bought it very right as the cab was rotten but afew lengths of box, flat, mig welder and a bit of time and its nearly good as new:rolleyes::rolleyes: I find that on our one the steering column is very straight, the clutch for whatever reason is very heavy and she has 38's on the rear so it feels very high and top heavy. Never gave any serious mechanical problems probably be alright to use for odd jobs just i wouldn't like be driving it everyday:P:P

Is yours the straight 698 and is your front axle/ 4wd good?
on this its seems to have rung off the shaft at front axle, not sure if its a big job to sort out...

if the driveshaft for the 4wd is missing there is probaly a lot of damage done somewhere for it to be removed.
there could be sprockets damaged in the front axle and unless its being sold very cheap it would be best avoided.

if the engine and gearbox are good and with mudguards needing work i wouldnt pay any more than 2000 euros for it.

are they really that bad of tractor Mossfort????-seems bit toocheap at €2000 and he would chase me out of the yard if i said that price to him but
anyway engine and gearbox are fine, cab not bad but mudguards need some slight attention but not rotten
he mentioned he would get €2600 at least for export without doing anything to it....
is the export market that good at the moment?????

I have a 698T 4WD in similar condition to this.
The prop shaft is off of mine because the bearings for the input shaft in the Diff require replacing.
Same story as the one you are looking at cab wise, all 600 series suffer from rotten cabs unless barn stored. You wont find any decent cabs in scrap for parts, so you may need to patch/ fabricate new mudgaurds.

I use the tractor mainly during summer months, for bailing and agitating slurry, keep meaning to repair front Diff but haven't got around to it yet. It has proven to be a very useful and dependable machine for us. (except for the 4WD)

I agree with agrostar, its not the most user friendly machine, it suits us fine for bailing and agitating but is a pig for yard work. (not the most manouverable machine in the world). We also have two 300 series 4WD machines with loaders which we use all year round for all the other jobs.

I would try and get it for around or less than that €2600 mark especially if you don't know condition of 4WD system.

You should at least check for play in input shaft of Diff and output shaft of Transfer box, It might give you an indication of which is likely to need attention.
Those shafts have a carrior Bearing in the middle of the shaft, You could be lucky some people remove the shafts when this bearing goes to prevent further damage.

Emaherx yours has the turbo which would make it much more desirable.
i rang up a few guys in the export business and first thing they wanted to know was it turbo, -

what price would You see this tractor at ????

ok i'm really a novice when it comes to tractors !!!
the long narrow shaft and underguard is off the tractor so to check the front axle etc what are the exact steps to check...

    thanks

    Gents,
I am quite new in this, I have just bought one of these MF698 for export to my home country in Africa. would you guys please let me know what things are likely to go wrong with this tractor and what sort of immediate parts i should send with the tractor as getting parts down there is quite a mission.

hi kincaid, here are points to help you. 698 had a 4.318 perkins. now parts for this engine are notoriously hard to get and she was notorious for blowing out the piece between the liners at the top of the block. this engnie was not kept around masseys for long.

the 4wd system is overcomplicated and expensive to fix. The drop box housing bushing wears which is why the 4wd bearing go and then is just a slippery slope and you've got the 4wd shaft disconnected.

cab rusted away and whily you can now get doors for them you cant get the fron cabe frame piece where the fron window sits. when that goes you'll have a problem.

if your really wanted to get her id say buy for a song if you can(less than 2000) , pull out engine and put in a 4.248 or T4.236 or a T1004 perkins into her and then tackle the 4WD. I have an origional workshop manual for her if your feeling brave ........

Thanks Marlyman .. Im actually doing up a '84 MF 398 at present,it belonged to an uncle of mine... is the engine the same as in the 698,cant seem to get the engine number on this one??

Its Actually very sound, good cab, doors and just slight rust in mudguards but otherwise very sound too but has the same problem as the 698 too as the 4wd shaft has dropped off too but going on what you say on the drop box housing bushing wears and if this turns out to be the likely problem what roughly would it cost to fix this...

the 398 had a perkins T4.236 engine. ther strongest of the 212/236/248 era. it was not the smae as a 698. it was a bullerproof engine just dont let the block crack with frost, they are not available.

the cab was a different kettle of fish compared to the 698, the 398 had a very goos cab. is it silver or black? the 300's 4wd is simple to repair. cant really help you without more info or seeing the machine. they are cheap to fix and you can do it yourself. as regards an exact price it depends on your local parts guy.

balls, the 298 had a perkins 4.318 engine. bad engine. all were replace with a 212/236/248 for reasons mentioned above. if you cant find the engine no though this might have been done already.

200's and 600's 4wd axles are more or less the same. cant get new duncan cab panels. why not strip it and make a nice footstep tractor out of it.

thanks....where is the engine number usually located and is there anything else to tell the difference between them..

and the 698 has the same engine as the 298 is that right

yes your right about the duncan cabs as i rang up duncan last year looking for a few pieces for inside of cab and no longer makes them
