MacStories claim that prices will start at €500 for the iPad.

I'll be waiting for the 2nd or 3rd Generation. After all they can only get better and cheaper.

Yeh looks like we will have to wait till Monday for the pre-orders to find out the official pricing.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

Disappointed. I was ok waiting til end of May but don't think I can hold off til end of July, effectively 3 months.

    Does anyone know:
    1) if u were to travel to Belfast would you then need a Sterling iTunes account just to activate the device even if you didn't intend buying anything via iTunes?
    2) are the 3g ipads unlocked internationally? Like if I was to buy a UK 3g ipad could I just wait until July and stick an Irish SIM in it then? This is also of interest to me because I'll be going to Oz for a couple of weeks around Christmas and want to know if I can bring my Irish or UK purchased 3g ipad and just stick an Oz sim card in it?

why do Apple constantly mess around with dates for these items?

They bring ipods out internationally, same day as US

They bring Macbooks, iMacs same day globally

what is so special about the iPad that the US needs to get all the orders before other countries?

And also why is the international release of the ipad spilt up into May and July?

    it just doesn't make sense

Why are ye traveling to Belfast for one. Why not just buy it online?

    Good idea,

that's if Apple don't decide to put some stupid embargo on them being shipped internationally.

That would be illegal if buying within the EU!

Supply and demand. They don't want stories in the press about stock running out (makes them look unprepared to shareholders). So better to give all the stock to the US for the initial demand, and have none anywhere else (not on sale = no expectations) than spread it all around and have it run out of stock everywhere.

Then, when the initial demand dies down in the US (biggest market), they move on to the next biggest one (UK), then move on again.

Demand for the iPad is way, way bigger than any iMac or MacBook at launch, so the same strategy doesn't apply.

No fun for us, but it makes business sense.

Maybe they are expecting some call backs or issues and don't want to spend money shipping stuff around the world ,that might need to be recalled ?

Where are you getting this from? Companies don't work that way. Delay products because of anticipated fictional recalls. So you are saying that they are releasing flawed products?

Really the issue is very simple. The demand has been huge and production is struggling to keep up so they have to stagger the launch, nothing sinister behind it at all.

Don't feel so bad having paid 500 for mine now. Apple tax is alive and well!

You won't be able to buy from a different AppleStore anyway. Ireland only. And before anyone goes ranting and raving, its always been that way. Same as the iPhone being released at different times around the world after the US launch.

So will you need a UK credit card?

    And delivery address.

Lads there are HUNDREDS of uk apple retailers that deliver to Ireland. The one i usually go for is ebuyer!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,487 ✭✭✭banquo

    Paying with cash an option?

Graham, how did you get yours?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,034 ✭✭✭mad muffin

    WTF!!?

There is an Apple Store in Belfast, but there is not one in the whole of the Republic of Ireland!?:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

You wouldn't need a UK credit card or address if you're buying it in person in Belfast. Tis only a train journey.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

So, anyone have any guesses when the ability to preorder will appear on the UK site? I'm assuming that if you're picking it up in store in person on launch day it won't matter that you're preordering from Ireland?

Just ordered a 32GB 3G model from the German Apple store \o/

Decent PAYG data rates with o2 Germany: €10 for 200mb, €15 for a gig or €25 for unlimited.

are you based in germany or were you able to have it shipped to ireland from the apple store?

Based in Germany, Apple won't let you order from abroad.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

Has anyone been able to reserve one for Belfast store pick-up yet somehow? The website only seems to have ability to pre-order for delivery, no mention of just reserving for store pick-up.

Sorry Banquo, almost missed your question. I got mine from an Apple Store in the US.

    Hi Graham

did you reserve for in-store pick up or just take your chances?

I can't figure out how to reserve for the Belfast store. I'm taking the 0930 Dublin to Belfast train on the 28th arriving about 11:45, hoping there will still be ipads available at that time without a reservation!

I'm thinking of going for 32gig 3G, so I think the wifi only models will probably go first.

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 17,643 Mod ✭✭✭✭Graham

I had a reservation in the Apple Store but I don't see any option for that on the Apple UK web site.

Stock levels didn't appear to be a problem in the US stores but there's no saying that will be the same situation for the UK.

If you're going to go to all the trouble of trekking to Belfast, I'd be tempted to suggest the 07:35 from Dublin, arriving at 09:45.

Brutal value! 200mb? Are they in the stone age? the other options are a rip off too.

not surprised considering its 02, they are a terrible, miserable bunch

Yeah, I would ideally, but I don't live in Dublin and can't make it in for the 0735 train. To do that I'd need to stay overnight in Dublin, and I'm not THAT bad! :)

been planning this myself. not sure what time to aim for, would be quite upset if I had to take a 2+ hr journey on the train (up & back) just to fall at the last hurdle.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,742 ✭✭✭Branoic

Yeah I know. And now with pre-orders delayed it's likely that there'll be more people going to the physical store on the 28th. I have a sinking feeling that they'll be sold out by the time I get there around noon, but I've already booked my train ticket and will take my chances. If I'm out of luck, I've never been to Belfast so I'll be a tourist for a day instead of rushing home to activate the iPad!

Activate the iPad in store if you manage to get one, then you can use it on the train home.

There now being sold in Dublin. Albeit at a high price. My last post was deleted as I named where it was being sold.
If a mod could advise me if this post is wrong I would appreciate it. I have nothing to do with the company. But Im sure some people would like to know.

The company have been named a couple of times and they've been involved with messing around here before, so they don't get the privilege of being named.

Needless to say they're buying in iPads from eBay or wherever and selling them to gullible fools with a 50% markup.

If some idiot poster wants to find out where to throw their money away on an iPad in Dublin, I'm sure google will help. Otherwise if you're looking for an iPad today; eBay.

Not true at all, they are €549 inc VAT, that's about a 50 quid mark(0r 10%) on current sterling prices.

Maybe we are talking about different companies?

Sorry, I meant to PM you but didn't get around to it.

It's pretty much as Seamus said - these people have been incessantly shilling Boards.ie over the past while and even made a veiled threat against me when I challenged them.

    Not the nicest of people.

What do you need to do this? Would I need to set up a UK iTunes Store account beforehand and use that to sign in with in the Belfast store or would my regular Irish sign-in work okay? Would there be any problems with the staff in the store if I'm using an Irish log in when it's not meant to be available for the republic yet?

A few people have been asking me the name of the place that sells the ipad @549 inc VAT.

Can a Mod let me know if it's ok to post the web address here?

People can then do their research and discuss if it's a reputable seller or not...

    Thanks

As far as I know, any iTines account can be used to activate the iPad. That said, given that it's free to create another iTunes account (in the UK in your instance) why wouldn't you prepare one in advance, just in case?
