I know its only page 21 of the Irish daily Mirror but..

Quote : Ireland should withdraw its Soldiers from Afghanistan, it was warned yesterday.

Michael D Higgins Labour Foreign Affairs spokesman, said there is no need for Irish involvement in the conflict.

He added " It is incumbent upon our Government that Ireland act with credibility...to avoid misinterpretation of our neutrality". Quote.

Man on a mission, or man with a moan?

Oh and before you start, yes i read the Mirror, it has the easiest crossword!

Well, that's another party who won't be getting my vote. I would suggest it is incumbent on him to find out about our "neutrality" and furthermore, explain how our stance is affected by participating in a UN Mandated mission.

    FFS.

He is looking to stir it up for publicity.

Does that same rag report on our defence forces EOD unit or Chad mission or other POSITIVE aspects?

and not that he'll read it but maybe he needs to become "informed" and also questioned on his parties defence policy... har har har

    All of seven.

They're not advisors, they're more there for training. They're working 'normal' jobs, it's not often that Irish military personnel get to work with other military forces in that sort of an operation. Golden learning opportunity for the Irish Army.

    NTM

Michael D is a notably eccentric rather absent minded individual. Making him foreign affairs spokesman for the Labour party makes you wonder what exactly they would be like if they got into government. Far from being neutral with him in charge we would allied with the PLO, Cuba and every other loony left wing regime out there.

    He can be safely ignored.

Ah, cool. Always thought they were there as advisors, but this is better.

Realistically, what can they advise NATO on? Home-made devices have advanced in leaps and bounds since the IRA days, and plenty of nations in ISAF have peacekeeping experience.

Thank you, Senator Mcarthy. But I don't think there's much risk of that happening, seeing as we're in the EU, and they frown upon that sort of thing.

Do any of the rags (including the so called respectable ones) ever portray the DF in a positive light? I dont actually think they do .

That's OK Fidel:), but you don't have to right wing to find some of the the loony left's ideas laughable. As for Michael D, he has a long record of supporting various left wing regimes and making utterly daft statements in support of them. No reason to suppose he would change if he got into government.

    Monday August 03 2009

Government ministers have been warned that an early end to our role in Chad will result in pressure from the UN and major international players to send soldiers to Afghanistan.
The UN is expected to seek a large contingent of Irish troops for Afghanistan if we leave the Chad mission in the coming months.

The proposal to withdraw from Chad in March -- two years after Irish troops joined the mission there -- was made by An Bord Snip Nua last month.

    Tuesday, 30 March 2010

The Government is to withdraw Irish peacekeepers from Chad, where 400 Irish troops have been on four-month tours of duty for the past two years.

Minister for Defence Tony Killeen said the current lack of certainty about the continuation of the UN mandate and the approach of the rainy season has forced this decision on the Government.

Right so Killeen was it Bord Snip or the rainy season ? Which? Slimy politician

The final group of Irish peacekeepers to serve in Chad arrived back in Dublin this afternoon

Now can we expect the UN asking for a bunch of Irish in Afghanistan? What will bord snip say? What if it rains?
Personally I`d love a properly equipped Irish contingent out there, but not with some dozy minister like that at the very top
