Video Requests- Sorry about the delay!

    Hi everyone,

We've been extremely busy and I only realised today when I logged on to boards that I'd overpromised and under-delivered on an offer I made to make a video in our gym on strength/hypertrophy sessions. Sorry!

Basically we're lucky enough to be very busy at the moment but in the next week or so we have a window of opportunity while one of our teams have a heavy game schedule where we can put together a few of the videos we get requested on our blogs, forums and believe it or not, Facebook! But like when you're so hungry you can't decide what to eat, we actually don't know where to start on what videos to make, so we thought we'd open it up to the boards folks.

So what would you be interested in seeing explained and talked/walked through? Programming? Technique? Injury prevention? Diet? Post your suggestions below and while I can't promise Spielberg, we will try to answer the questions people have about training.

    So... shoot!

I'd be interested in your take on shoulder warmup/mobility/rehab type of thing. And maybe something on programming too?

A good HIIT programme for the cross trainer for a relative beginner?

The correct technique for curls using free weights at home?

    Dynamic warm up

Any training you do with athletes or gaa players.

    Thanks

I think implementing periodization correctly in a strength program is something a lot of us could improve on. Maybe just an explanation of how and why periodization is important and some examples would be just the job!

Thanks folks, some good suggestions there.

Some of the topics you've asked for are quite general and probably couldn't be adequately compressed into a 3 or 5 minute video but probably what we'll do is do a general one and then if it doesn't answer the question, ask for clarification and we'll try to either do another one or just discuss it further here, or if the mods aren't happy with that, you can open another thread. Something like that anyway I'm just thinking aloud.

I'd say we'll do the shoulder stuff first, although I think the curls one is our favourite and we may just do that one instead. Curls are everyone's favourite.

I'd really like to see what you guys do with the GAA teams for conditioning work. Both off season and what they could be doing approaching championship.
(Preferably something that doesn't involve the prowler, mainly cos my gym or GAA club hasn't got one!)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,025 ✭✭✭d'Oracle

    Yeah,

I'd like to see how you guys would go about annihilating people without the Prowler too.

How about warm ups to the big compound lifts, Deads, Squats, Bench, Overhead Press

Barry - Could you maybe do a video about Dynamic warm-ups? Like mentioned in the below link?

I'd love to learn how to 1/4 squat. Can't seem to find any good videos on youtube where they show you how to do it with at least 200k, any chance of you sticking one up?

Sure no prob but only if you model for it.

We've been switching internet providers in the last week but should be up and running today or this evening so we'll get cracking on these.

We are going to start working through making these videos this week so I just want to get some clarification...some of the stuff has already been done...for example..here's some shoulder mobility stuff.

    Shoulder Mobility & Stability Work

    and

Yet more Shoulder Mobility & Stability Work

    or

    Some Shoulder Prehab Stuff

    and

    Some more Shoulder Prehab Stuff

and that's for starters....but the more specific the questions are the more specific the answers will be.

So a question like 'something on programming' is pretty general and considering I've presented seminars in the past that went 2 days and were still just the tip of the iceberg with regards programming for sport you might want to be a bit more specific with regards what element of programming you are interested in...or what sport maybe?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,045 ✭✭✭Will Heffernan

    Dynamic warm up
Did this today...but Barry said I looked depressed so we'll do it again this afternoon after I've drank more coffee.
Any training you do with athletes or gaa players.

    Thanks
    Keith

    What sport? What period?

Are we talking macrocycles or microcycles? A model for a year or 8 weeks? The more specific the question the better.

I don't foam roll my 'shoulders' but I do my lats and chest...this sounds like the shortest video of the lot :)

You can see what St Oliver Plunkett's and St Jude's did on the website....C1 and C2 every week.

That's easy...actually had someone ask this week if they could just do the prowler...the turf isn't just in the gym for picnics :)

Do you mean 'general' warm ups or are we talking about 'specific' warm ups as in how to work up to a 1RM?

If you could do something on upper/lower trap imbalance, that'd be swell.

Specifically lower trap exercises for combating said imbalance, only thing I find useful is prone trap raises. Also any good serratus anterior exercises would be great or anything else thats good for winged scap. Not really loving scap pushups.

What exactly is that shoulder prehab exercise for?? (the bent elbow pull thing).

Not exactly sure what you are referring to here? What sort of imbalance? Over active upper traps? Weak lower traps?

With these issues it is all about execution. A lot of individuals have faulty mechanics/movement patterns...they go about doing rehab/prehab without sorting out these issues and only further ingrain them. Make sure you are not in that camp.

That's cool...do them lying on a bench with dumbbells or a barbell.

A lot of people don't know the difference between when their shoulder is sore as a result of movement pattern issues, anatomical limitations, muscular issues or capsular problems...this is a sledgehammer approach to the two latter issues.

Would I be cheeky if I said all of it??

If I am then my preferences would be:
    1. Conditioning
    2. Speed and Agility
    3. Strength Work

    Thanks

    Oh.

I just havent found them to be that beneficial to me. I did them for a few months without too much improvement and didn't notice much strength increase tbh. Ive been doing them on an incline with dumbells recently, I'll see how that goes.
Not exactly sure what you are referring to here? What sort of imbalance? Over active upper traps? Weak lower traps?

I think more over active upper traps. In my own case the physio found that a lot of exercises to strengthen the lower traps were not as beneficial because the upper traps were doing too much, the only thing using enough lower traps were prone trap raises.

I'm guessing that puts me in the bad camp. :(

We can do that...we'll break it down I think and drip feed it to you...maybe make a series...sort of like on TV.

It does get to a stage where you need loading...I do them with the x-vest on occasionally. Scap push ups are only a small portion of the solution though...they are not a miracle fix on their own.

I'd be interested in seeing this as well. I tried foam rolling my chest for the first time last night and it was agony, so I am thinking I need to do it as much as possible from now on.

Going to get some of these done this week again. The problem isn't so much recording them as finding time to sit down and upload them, but here's the answer to how to do a curl to keep you entertained in the meantime:

Actually is there anything I can do regarding this, or is it something you need a someone to check for. I'm a lot more aware of my scaps now than I used to be but I wouldn't be too sure about whether or not my mechanics or movement patterns are correct.

actually Barry, if you guys get time will go through the clean as a movement and where people commonly go wrong..

My knee keeps getting worse and can't train my legs properly, but i can do these, would like to make sure i have my form nailed.

    Please and thanks

Where did the dynamic warm up one go? Been using bits out of it since. The grass looks well in it. I'm guessing it makes prowling harder.

    Any questions...just fire away.

I only saw this now because it was bumped, I think we made a new thread for it but it's on my youtube http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=bazoglesby#p/a/u/1/Ss09vqzHkwQ
We have a job of work ahead of us in the next few weeks to put all the older videos from myself and Will's channels into IP's. Once that's done it'll be a one stop shop for a lot of material.

You left me alone here at work for 10 mins and I've taken over the internet...I've stuck my nose into a half dozen threads...I've only got another 30mins till I go train myself and disappear from boards again for another 6 months leaving a trail of destruction and confusion in my wake.

If there are other videos we promised that we didn't deliver (we do that a lot...well I do anyway) just remind us and we'll try to not get them done faster than we didn't do these ones :)

Sure thing. edit: oops, this was my reply.
