Running LSRs at pmp?

Currently training for my second crack at Cork marathon, having dropped out last year. Have taken my training a lot more seriously this year and think 4 hours is a reasonable goal. I managed Yasso 800s at 3m50 pace without any trouble and managed to finish the bay run in 1hr50 so I seem to be on the right track.

The thing is that I would like to be as sure as possible that I can manage a 4hr pace on the day (I know there are no guarantees). I have two LSRs remaining before the race, 20 tomorrow and 22 next week. My question is would it be ok to run the second half of one or both of these runs at PMP or do I run the risk of getting injured or of burning myself out?

I was very tired during last year's race and I put this down to an 18 mile run that I did at faster than PMP two weeks before the race. Don't want to make the same mistake again, as I plan on finishing this year if it kills me!

    Any advice appreciated.

    Hi Cerlan,

    This was covered before: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055832432

I did an LSR 10 easy and 10@PMP and it was grand. Hard but no ill effects. Thats just me though. You'll see on that link that some do harder (up to 18m PMP).

    Good luck with Cork!

Cheers for the link misty floyd. Exactly what I was looking for. 16 miles it is next week so!

So you are going to do 16 at PMP is that right? Have you done any other races like a half or 10miler and how did that go? Just me, but I'd rather use that as a test.

I did the bay run last weekend in 1hr50 and felt I had more in the tank, had negative splits of around 3 minutes. That has definitely given me more confidence but i'd like to be sure to be sure if you know what I mean.

Ya was thinking of doing 16 miles at mp next weekend during the 22 miler and then easing into the taper. Or would you be happy that that the half marathon was enough of a predictor?

For what it's worth I've made an effort to keep my 16 mile + runs somewhat slower than PMP. This was after listening to and reading all the views, of which there are many. I'm assuming/hoping that the taper and race preparation will enable me to hold PMP on race day.

Oh, and I love Yassos and fly around the track doing them. In my case though they are definitely NOT a predictor of a marathon time.

See you at the starting post.

I did 4 x 15 miles pmp runs before Blackpool marathon a few weeks ago. Worked for me, some say dont do it as its to risky but i think it was worth the risk:D

I reckon the Yasso 800s aren't a very accurate predictor of my pace either RoyMcC! way too easy. good luck with the training.

Think i'll risk it alright Oisin11178. What's the worst that can happen eh....
