I am on a deficit. I eat less.
2000 is average required for a woman. An average man or a larger woman would require 2500, a large man would be 3000+ and thats the healthy target.

@ 5ft 11 and 67kg - i eat between 32-3500 cals a day to maintain but that's because im doing a lot of training at the mo. If i was very sedentary i would eat 12cals per pound of body weight and if im not training but moving around and walking lots during the day with college up flights of stais all day etc i would eat closer to 2500.

What are you actually asking/wondering? If many people are currently on a deficit?

I read the average intake in Ireland before, and it was either 3200kcal or 3500kcal, which I presume was average between men & women. Sounded high to me but overweight people have higher basal metabolic rates and there are plenty of overweight people about.

Depends what I am doing. If I'm stuck in the house and not getting significant exercise, it's probably 2000 or less. If I'm doing a lot of cycling, it could be 3000 or higher.

I've been logging my food in Fitday this past few weeks for fun (I know I have a perverse sense of the word 'fun')

It turns out that I eat anything from 1600 to 2500 depending on the day and how hungry I am, I'm not trying to lose weight and I don't restrict my calorie intake besides the occasional fast.

Although weirdly I always seem to eat fat, protein and carbs in a ratio of 60:20:20 without trying at all.

I'm on a deficit at the moment. I'm not dropping below 1800. Most days I'm in the 2200-2400 region. Those days I need to get in quite a bit of exercise to produce the kind of deficit I'm after (1000+ calories). The weight is falling off though. After I'd done the initial ditching of sugary crap a while ago (like well over a year ago with the occasional fall off the wagon) I've found sub'ing in fat for carbs on the deficit days keeps me from going (as g'em would say) doolally.

edit: I have found it very difficult to do explosive exercise (read Muay Thai training and / or HIIT) without a decent amount of carbs in my diet though.

Either eat a small carb meal before the workout, or try some coconut oil. Melted in coffee is easiest way to take it. Coconut oil has a lot of MCT, so it acts more like a carb, giving quick energy.

Coconut coffee, eh? I could try that.

I know a few keto-ing MMA people who swear by it. Personally, I'd rather eat my calories, but hey!

Yeah, the only calories I drink are the ones in my coffee or protein shakes generally. It's worth a lash though.

+1 on coconut, I get a viceral burst of energy when I have some coconut cream mixed in with some 99% chocolate and set to make a kind of truffle. It's yummy too!

Coconut is very handy for people who suffer with their gall bladder too as it doesn't require any bile salts to be digested.

    * UL rushes off to make coconut coffee*

You can get coconut flour in asian shops, it is about 65% fat and I think it works out cheaper than the oil, dunno if it would be more or less processed. I mix it with oats & milk. I also fry pancakes in coconut oil, make them really greasy, probably gets rid of some of the goodness of the oil but I use a fairly low heat.

Ive been using Fitday to log how much I have been eating over the last few days and it normally comes out at about 1500 but it says I am eating about 45% of this in fat. I am following a low GI, high protein diet but the high level of fat worries me a bit. Is that right?

Bear in mind that's calories, not absolute grams. 45% is fine, I wouldn't get too hung up on macronutrient ratios, as long as you're eating good quality food, are feeling good and not spiking your blood sugar too much you'll be fine.

Sounds like it's working for you.

Don't worry about the fat - my fat is sometimes half my daily intake. Always feel better when i have a higher fat intake.
