Countdown begins to 520 day 'Mars Mission'

A group of volunteers have started final training in Russia in preparation for being locked up in a capsule for 520 days to simulate the psychological effects of the voyage to Mars.
Three Russians, two other Europeans and one Chinese national will be shut away for one-and-a-half years inside the 180-square-metre (1,000-square-feet) module on the outskirts of Moscow starting late May or early June.

Thats nearly 2 years of your valuable life locked up in a capsule with 5 other dudes which you wont get back and will no doubt be psychologically changed.
I admire them for volunteering as it is probably very necessary if there ever is to be a manned mission to Mars but I dont see how anyone could do it.
Two years of your youth is just too valuable.
To be honest, even if I was to be the first man to actually land on Mars I dont think I would go through with it if it meant 2 years in a capsule.

To see the effects like that, couldn't they just look at prison inmates?

I know, why don't they lock themselves away in a capsule *in space*, that way by the time the ''test'' is over, they'll already be there!

This has just reminded me of a show on Channel 4 a while back where they actually convinced some people that they were going to be the first 'civilians' to be brought into space, they filmed the whole thing.
I can't remember if it was a spoof (I really hope it was) but they actually believed they were in space....
Even had a 'gravity machine'

    A fleshlight?

    A fleshlight?

    Had to google that.
It'd go a bit mouldy after 18 months, I'd say.

No women in the simulation! Could be a few extra leaving that capsule in 2 years if there was!

It's different in that so few people must be together in an relatively small space for 18 months.

Other than being surrounded by scumbags, I'd consider the thought of prison a luxury compared to this.

Is there any chance of having an AH thread about anything without someone mentioning scumbags?

    Bloody scumbags, man!!

Seriously though, I think I'd rather die than be locked in a box with 4 other lads for a year and a half.
    Call me mad, but...

Can someone put 180 square metres into context for me?
I'm not good with measurements :o

Imagine you had a metre long square shape.
Now imagine you have 180 of them.

I wouldn't mind doing it if I thought I was actually going to Mars. Actually I'd jump at the chance!! I think the thought of making history like that would just about keep you going. But what they're doing is crazy. Soembody's going to end up going proper mad.

I wonder do they have a little fap-module.

I reckon one of them won't fap for the entire duration and when he finally leaves the experiment so sexually frustrated, his balls will be so full that a light breeze against his crotch will have him blowing his load in his pants!

I wonder how much they're getting paid. If they're walking out of that capsule two million roubles (about 52,000 euros) better off then I'd be happy enough to do it.

    pfft, this is pointless!
Once we go past the Van Allen belts, the radiation from the sun and space will kill them pretty soon without some fancy protective hull! All we have at the moment is big huge metre thick lead walls, which are way too heavy to launch into space, so we'd need a new material. They'd be better off spending the 2 years trying to solve that issue instead of human sized lab rat tests!
