no feild trial champs or anything, she came from a local breeder has had the same line for nearly 40 years, all excellent rough shooting dogs, hopefully she will follow the same way, both parents are purebred but mother is un reg'd

    Oooh she is so cute!!!!

We always had (& still have) Red Setters in my home place but it's been so longer since I saw a puppy Setter...she's fab!

Best of luck with her J.

Plenty of research now whiles she's young.

I had the pointer in the field at 2-3 months whiles doing the rounds. Thinking back it was gas he had to follow my lines through the long grass & when I stopped for a breeder (for him;)) he'd run around chasing butterflies. How things change very quickly!!
I got him at the very same time 2 years ago so she should be nice & "birdy" by the end of the season.

I got my 1st point at 3.5 months on a nice obliging hen that we stumbled on & after that there was no going back. I eased him off pheasant ground til about September again & there was no issue with hens on eggs. The butterflies were a thing of the past at this stage & game was the only interest.

She should go with you everywhere possible & a few hours a day of just been near you at this age does wonders for the bond.

Don't go too much into commands for awhile & leave her have fun being a pup but train the whistle (recall) straight away especially if bringing her for walks in the fields.

Exciting times ahead & best of luck!

    Good luck with the pup.

A few words of wisdom from a wise dog man.

"When does training begin? That's easy! From day one by choosing the right strain and the right parents. I handle my pups as much as possible as soon as their eyes are open. They are talked to daily and by the time they are a few weeks old, they are following me around and dashing up to be petted. My problem is to stoop over to tie a shoe lace without a dozen wet noses pushed in my face!

The most import part for me is the founding of a relationship with that pup. It gets to know my voice and body language. We communicate. Coming to call to get a game or petting or perhaps a few table scraps at the back door lays the foundations for "Come here". Later that will be useful, first in training and then in handling the dog when out hunting, more of which later.

I'll teach pup things like the Sit as I go about daily chores. Make use of the pup's natural inclinations and occasionally pop in a trigger word to mould associations. You can read how this is done in my book "Pointers and Setters" and see my techniques in action on my videos. Don't take my word for it, judge for yourself whether they work." .... Derry Argue
