Following on from the previous thread on kick mics, what do you guys use for snares? I haven't really used much bar a beta57, though I'm not doing stuff at a pro level. Am interested to know what others use.

Standard 57 mostly. Just one usually, don't often go for an under snare mic. Big part of the sound comes from the NT5s on the OHs too. Trying to get my hands on an i5 to try out as well, I've heard lots of good things.

    Audix i5 top. 57 bottom.
The i5 gives (me) a better snap and punch compared to a 57.

    Sennheiser e 604

e904, admittedly for simplicity reasons more than anything else.

I keep hearing about Audix, must get around to trying them.
Do you adjust phase when you mic underneath as well or do you need to angle them differently?

I have a 604, never thought to use it on a snare though, with the 57 lying around

I know this isn't directed at me but I would say flip phase.

Yeah...I'm probably the only guy here without a 57. Must try it on the bottom with a 906 on the top.

im of the get a great overhead snare sound and beef it up with a close mic like a 57 a little school

but you need a drummer who can balance the kit well.

ive tried loads of mics and

1/ the OLD 57 is still a great snare mic - and I would use this most as i love its transient snap - the betas dont do it for me

2/ audix i5 is or nearly is as good as a 57 , it has a bit more low end
but is GREAT on toms up to 14 inches - its a wicked tom mic.

3/ the josephson c42 is a secret weapon snare mic - a great tone
quite expensive though- if you have one ) or any very good SDC - TRY IT.

4/ e 604 aint bad either - would consider it as well.

if you are recording gentle snare work or brushes - its better use over heads or large condensors placed around the drummers shoulders.

I have got great results with a Beyer 201 on top and maybe an C451 or 57 on the bottom (although I rarely use the bottom mic to be honest). Get my snare from the OHs and top mic.

Can't really sing the praises of the Beyer 201 enough, brilliant mic for the money.

    Beyer 201 top ;) weapon....

    weird how good it is...

Ya, the 201 is a super mike. Better than a 57, for all the things that 57s are usually used for. I have a fondness for the older one though, the 577SB. Great on guitar cabs.

I have also had great success using a Beyerdynamic M58, the omni dynamic. All that proves is that if the drummer and the room is very good, the mics do not make much difference (within reason). To put it another way, get a good musician with a good kit set up right in the room, and the rest is trivial.

M201, I5, Sm57 all great mics a lot of people love the m201 on snare

Oh and as stated already the o/h will play a big part of your snare sound a lot of the time

    SM57 or KM84 works well........

57 or a 421 and well placed overheads. The main snare sound comes from yr o/h anyway, so yr close mic is just the attack bit. I like to get the overheads sounding good first and then work backwards.
