    Trying to get my own personal profile picture but having no luck.

    I'm afraid custom avatars are only for subscribers. You can select one of the non-custom avatars by going into your UserCP (top left of the screen, below the Boards logo), go to Settings & Options on the left hand side of teh screen and click on Edit Avatar.
