First up England v Pakistan followed by New Zealand v South Africa

Both games should be close, thought the Kiwis looked very good in their first game.

England won toss put Pakistan into bat. Lot of extras in England's bowling performance (10), and very poor in the field apart from brilliant catch from Pietersen.

Pakistan finish on 147 for 9

England doing well at the moment.

Pietersen is down injured, that, or he just needs to check on loved ones (i.e. himself). Looking forward to seeing Morgan bat, England's best player by far.

England required run rate is just 6.63 so in theory they should win easily from here. IN THEORY!

Looks like KP is having a ball ;) out there.. Looking ridiculously easy for England..

Christ, that Pakistani wicket-keeper is wrecking my head....desperately dull fielding from the pakistanis, easy meat for England.

I did a great job of jinxing Morgan, out for 5!! England need 8 to win from 12

Plum bowled as well...did manage a few nice strokes though...

England win, comfortably enough in the end. Next up Kiwis v Saffers. Hoping New Zealand will do the job.

    Easy win for SA.

Yeah easy enough, the score comparisons for both innings were very similar until the time morkel came in, then they weren't even close!

Game 1: Australia v India 14:00 Sky Sports One

Game 2: West Indies v Sri Lanka 18:00 Sky Sports One

Couple of great games in prospect today, I hope the first game lives up to what it could be, I think Australia will be a bit too strong/consistent for India, the second game, if both teams fire should also be explosive, think Sri Lanka will win it unless Gayle really turns up to the party.

I think both the games are going to be good. India may not be good in bowling but they can very well make that up with their batting.

SL looking a bit inconsistent but you never know. They have some good players. WI is a good T20 side.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,325 ✭✭✭✭Dozen Wicked Words

India win the toss and choose to field.

Aussies 104 off first 10.3 overs without loss, going after Jadeja, not sure we will see him bowl his last two. Sixes all over the place.

edit: Watson bowled, still an absolutely brilliant start from Australia

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,325 ✭✭✭✭Dozen Wicked Words

Australia look comfortably set to get 200. They are 141 for 1 after 13.4 overs. Some huge sixes all over the ground. In reply india gettin hammered. 62 for 7 is going to do their run rate no good at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭reb73

Considering the state India were in, 135 isn't too bad a score I guess.

But Australia with their 3/4 quicks combination are in red-hot form at the moment. They should qualify for semi-finals easily enough but I think they will come unstuck then..

On a sidenote, isn't it crazy that Michael Clarke, predominantly a batsman and the captain - chose not to bring himself on at two down.. They had the buffer of healthy runs in the bank and looked like a strange decision to me..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭reb73

Sri Lanka batting first, 7/1 in 2.4 overs..

Sanath Jayasuriya looks to be lost, its wise not to dabble in politics and cricket :o

Woeful Windies - their performance in the field has been awful (bordering on the negligent) - you would have expected more effort in front of their home crowd, and they really do not deserve anything from this match based on their performance so far

SL 157-1 after 17 - they should be getting over 190 at this rate

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭reb73

How unlucky for Mahela (or lucky for mere mortals) to be stranded on 98 not out.. He is certainly enjoying a purple patch, and a joy to watch as well with his pleasing strokeplay!

Which reminds me - no-one has successfully answered these questions yet

I reckon WI would have been chasing a total nearer 150 than 196 if they had made a half-decent effort in the field

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,356 ✭✭✭coldfire1x

BOth the matches got one sided in the end with similar results.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭booth70

Indian Cricket....all the money in the world but dont have players that can handle raw pace on a true bouncy pitch:(...as an Indian and a very avid supporter twas very embarassing to see these highly paid prima donnas struggle against top quality bowling....that was a thrashing and a half by Australia

Unless the biggest sulk in world cricket.. i.e Yuvraj Singh fires dont give India any chance of progressing any further

    Australia will take some stopping

Agree with that, unfortunately. I am not sure on some of the other dead pitches that other games have been played on they would look as good, but as you say booth70, if they get to play remainder on hard, bouncy tracks I can only see one winner of the tournament, they looked awesome yesterday.

    Today's games:

New Zealand v Pakistan 1400 Sky Sports 2 Pakistan win the toss and will bowl

England v South Africa 1800 Sky Sports 2

First game will see the loser all but out of the competition. Cant choose between the two, I thought the Kiwis would be there at least til semi finals but seem very flat and Vettori still troubled with his back. Pakistan are well, as easy to judge as any Pakistan team

Second game will see the winner virtually through to semis, both teams have shown weaknesses. England shown up by a determined Ireland team which would have been a very close finish had the weather not intervened, South Africa won their first game at a canter, but really only due to some brutal hitting by Morkel near the end. Like any game of T20 one big performance can change a game, I hoping today will be another Morgan day!!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,498 ✭✭✭Mothman

Wow what a finish, down to last ball.
Pakistan needed 11 off final over with Butt on strike on 59.

2 fours later, 3 needed off final 2 balls.

    Leg bye

needing 2 off last ball to win,

and Rehman on 0 facing his third ball and he sends it down deep square legs throat and is caught.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

The South Africans ... sorry I mean Pietersen and Kieswetter ... are ripping SA apart, after the early loss of Lumb

KP clearly loves playing against them on this type of pitch, and is 33 no off 20, Kieswetter 28 no off 26 - England 72-1 after 8.

  • Administrators, Social & Fun Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 78,393 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭Beasty

    KP has gone for 53 (off 33) - 100-2 off 12

Pietersen (and Kieswetter) clearly rattled his countrymen, with dropped catches, a catch off a no-ball, a bouncer going for 4 wides and Boucher failing to even attempt one catch - in fact it's a fielding performance that only perhaps WI could better:rolleyes:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,325 ✭✭✭✭Dozen Wicked Words

KP on his way home now so out of next game against kiwis. Supposed to be back for semi if england make it. Another good display by england, even yardy bowled well.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭booth70

Do or die for both India and WI today....WI 0/38 after 7.2 with Gayle looking ominous and Chanderpaul looking anything but!....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,384 ✭✭✭booth70

India...2/27 off 5 and continue to look hopeless against the short ball...should be bounced out of the world cup today:(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,356 ✭✭✭coldfire1x

Australians looks awesome, they started poorly in todays match but looks at the end result. They are looking like champion side and deserve to win the tournament.

Indian batsman need to sort out playing the short pitch deliveries. I guess they miss Shewag. Rohit desicison was poor but didnt really deserve to win.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,325 ✭✭✭✭Dozen Wicked Words

Australia look unbeatable, from being 70 odd for 5 or 6 to getting a really decent total, then skittling the Sri Lankans out. I just hope they have an off day in the semis!

    Todays games

Pakistan v South Africa 1400 Sky Sports 1

New Zealand v England 1800 Sky Sports 2

Pakistan need a miracle to get through but hammering SA is their only chance and hope that the other result goes their way.

England will be hoping to finish 3 out of 3 in the Group. I fancy a SA and NZ win today. No KP for England so not sure who will come in for England, Bopara?

I am pretty sure it will be Bopara, as all the other options are bowlers (although a couple of them can bat a bit down the order) - Bopara also gives them a bowling option

Of course KP could get caught up in the volcanic ash cloud, in which case Bopara may be needed a bit more if England progress

SA lose to Pakistan, and are out. England are guaranteed a place in the SFs. NZ will join them if they win this evening's match, otherwise it will be between them and Pakistan on Net Run Rate

A win for NZ sees them through and a loss with see Pakistan through as NZ's NRR is inferior to PAK and a loss will only push it down further..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

think NZ can afford to lose with 160 run rate though, that give them 0.8 NRR
+0.3 what they already have to give them the edge

other wise pak's in, heres hopin for pak but with such a poor squad i doubt they have a chance in semi's against australia or westindies

NZ's current NRR is -0.3. A loss is never gonna improve this to a positive figure (Pak's is +0.041)

Having said that, not really sure if Pak deserve to be in the Semi-final's as they have been kinda hit and miss the whole tournament. But their batsmen are certainly more capable of playing the short balls, better than their Indian counterparts! (Hope this doesn't come back to bite me, though)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

sorry i meant add on to that +(-0.30)
thought pak were on 0.50 ?

edit run rate are NZ with the current score?
    i think 150 ?

You have to love how the non English commentators keep referring to Morgan as the Irishman. Cue silence from Lloyd or Hussain.
Looks like England are gonna get home here thanks in no small part to another cracking innings from Morgan.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭reb73

Pakistan have qualified, incredibly, and this after losing 2 out of the 3 super eight matches.. They may come back to haunt England in the final yet :D

Australia and Sri Lanka to qualify from Group E, I reckon.. It would be a miracle for India to squeeze into the semis a-la Pakistan now..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,356 ✭✭✭coldfire1x

It really is ironic that teams are qualifying after loosing 2 out of 3 matches. Pak should thank England.

... and England should thank Eoin ;) Another good inning, well done. If KP gets back in time they will have good chance for making to final based on the form of other teams.

Though I still dont see anyone beating Australia.

It's T20, and pretty much anything is possible - I would certainly not rule out Pakistan - with all international sports events of this nature it's who's playing well at the end of the tournament that matters - the first part is all about qualification. Sustaining top performances at the highest level match after match is never easy (although Australia have had more practice than others over the years)

If England and Australia do get through, arguably they would both be due a poor performance - could work in England's favour though if Australia are installed as hot favourites.

in the same reign, previous T20, pak didnt lose any matches and stole the trophy.

    Todays games

India v Sri Lanka 1730 Sky Sports 1

West Indies v Australia 2130 Sky Sports 1

Forecast for rain at times today, so hopefully it wont affect the results.

India up against it, so they should be motivated for their final game, I fancy them to win to restore a bit of pride in an otherwise disappointing tournament for them. Sri Lanka will probably feel they have enough to qualify anyway, if they keep it close.

The West Indies can still mathematically qualify with a huge win over Australia, and being a day nighter, winning the toss would make a hammering slightly more likely, don't think it will happen, but it would be nice!!!

    Where did you get that?

Provided Australia play to form and beat WI and India manage to beat SL by at least 20 runs, India will edge ahead of WI and SL to qualify (I'm sure there is a corresponding equivalent if India are chasing). At least this is what CricInfo has to say on this..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

    LOL IMAGINE

West Indies beat Australia by 87 runs, and Sri Lanka beat India by a 68-run margin. Then both West Indies and Sri Lanka will have a higher NRR than Australia. It's a possibility

Yep, you are right reb, i should have checked my facts!!!! Got it from here!!!!!!. Funny, because if I had "read more" on their site, they disprove their own story here!

Still hoping for the dream scenario of Australia going out!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭reb73

India looked promising for a good score at 119/2 after 14 overs, but some smart bowling and pathetic batting restricted them to 163/5 in 20.

Still a competitive score, but whether Sri Lanka can be restricted for a total under 143 is doubtful.. Sri Lanka looking slight favourites to get the win as things stand at the break..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,070 ✭✭✭Placebo

    Thushara 4.0 0 41 2

    jesus, 41 !
not too bad of a score, but srilanka's batting is fierce

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭reb73

Sri Lanka 19/2 off 3 overs, Mahelan and Sanath sent back.. But there is a lot of batting in Sri Lanka's team today..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 343 ✭✭reb73

Make that 100/3 in 13.5 overs, a few lusty blows by Sanga bringing SL closer to the win..
