Boards AC singlet

Is it possible to get a Boards AC singlet even if I'm not a member of the club? I'd like one to run in for the wicklow way relay (for one of the two Boards teams).

I know there was talk of making one available in a thread by Cabaal, I cant find that thread now because it wasnt actually about a singlet and I cant remember the name.

It too would love to be able to buy one, like the cycling forum I think it would be great if random people could buy them so they could be spotted out and about around Ireland.

The other thread was really a distraction to what it was originally about, but this one will do much better for coming up with a potential design for a Boards.ie A/R/T Forum (note that is not the same as Boards AC) tech t-shirt.

This is the very quick rough design I knocked together before:
    picture.php?albumid=299&pictureid=5957

I've forgotten where I got the links to the Boards.ie graphics now, but will stick them up later. There are also some rules regarding their use as well.

I really like the design of the current singlet. There's no problem running IMRA races in that singlet while NOT a member of Boards AC, but you can bet your bottom dollar that issues will arise when more non-members start wearing the singlet in AAI-accredited races. To this end, could a compromise next print-run of singlets change the "AC" text to Boards "ART"?

Not meaning to state the obvious, but if you want to run in the singlet, why not join the club? The only people who should be running in Boards AC singlets should be Boards AC members - otherwise what's the point in paying a membership fee?

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators, Sports Moderators Posts: 24,144 Mod ✭✭✭✭robinph

I think the current Boards AC singlet needs to remain for the actual club of Boards AC, with the allowances for the IMRA races. But I also think there is a market for something for these ART forumites who are not members of Boards AC for whatever reason and are prepared to "out" themselves as interwebnet runners. I'd not want another singlet, but a tshirt for training would be handy although it's not as if we don't accumulate enough thirts anyway.

I'm already a member of another AAI club, who I would run for in provincial races, but we tend not to send runners to IMRA races, so I'm registered as a Boards runner for them.

I'm just being Devil's Advocate here Peckham, but I suspect for a lot of runners, the question you've posed is key. Perhaps what a lot of Boardies want is the "cameraderie" type club aspect that posting and reading on this forum offers, without the formal commitment to joining an online club. Not trying to be smart here, but what is the point in paying a membership fee?

That sounds fine in principle, however I would fear that if your club saw you racing in another club's singlet (even in a non-AAI event) they would not be best pleased...and possibly landing you (and us as a club) in a bit of hot water.

The point in paying a membership fee is to provide the benefits of AAI membership - this includes racing in top quality races restricted to clubs (national road relays, novice/intermediate XC etc.), reduced/preferential entry to other races (Great Ireland Run/National 10k), being entitled to run in the club singlet (and the support this gives you from "random" spectators in races), insurance (which I'm not 100% sure about, but think it covers you if you injure yourself if competing for the club in an AAI race).

We're constantly looking for new benefits to provide members....

Here is the link to the thread with Boards.ie graphics:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055310569

...and here is some rules regarding their use:
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?threadid=2055590977

...and here is a jpg that you can use your crayons on to create your own design:
    http://www.4colorrebellion.com/media/pics/jun/tshirt_template.jpg

We would probably need some more official template and details on what can and cannot be printed for coming up with a proper design, but that's enough to come up with something and to see who is interested in the idea.

I've checked (and double-checked) the situation on club running with IMRA- there is no requisite to sign up for a club. (Boards aren't alone in doing this, for instance Sli Cuallain is an amalgamation of Wicklow based clubs/runners).

I have been specifically told (by an AAI man who would know) that there is no problem with being a member of one AAI club, and running under another clubs colours in IMRA. (Any AAI politico's who want to debate this are more than welcome to look for examples on the top of Tonelagee:))

While this is an impressive list of benefits, I think it is missing the main point of a club- a structured training routine, where you meet and work out with your peers. (And again, this is only my opinion, and I applaud all the work you and others have done in setting up Boards AC). Most posters on Boards seem happy to turn up for (and discuss) races on their own (or, at most, as a loose group of "Boardies"), and most of the faster runners will already be in other clubs, where they can progress from the tiered group training. I'd suspect the entitlement to run in the club singlet would be the biggest draw for most, AAI registered or not.

I don't see a problem there, but the main issue would be giving out loads of singlets to people who may then show up and run races such as the Bupa 10k in the singlet, This was a AAI cc too and could have problems for the club down the line.
I'm not sure on the exact rules but in the end of the day it is a BAC singlet and not an Boards.ie singlet

Nail on the head. I ran the Limerick marathon in my boards singlet, (even though I'm not a member), because the pacers were organized from here. The marathon was an AAI-accredited event, so technically I shouldn't have been wearing it, but there was a whole plethora of AAI rules that were flouted, to which the AAI didn't seem to mind when sanctioning...

Bottom line for Daithi's question, is that it's okay to wear the singlet in IMRA races as far as AAI or IMRA are concerned, but if Boards AC wanted this practice to stop, I'd stop.

Well as there is no IMRA rules don't allow it then there are no rules to break, so I guess once you can get hold of a singlet then it can be worn.. :) just like I could show up in a dress and a top hat :)

Likewise. My club are fully aware that I have run for Boards in the past for IMRA and intend to in the future, but if it ever causes a problem from the Boards side, then please let me know, and I'll quite happily comply with whatever needs to be done.

Didn't realise I was stirring up quite such a hornet's nest!

Its not really a hornet's nest just a cross over from Boards AC to the imra Boards team is it the same :) , I like the idea of the training tops too and wouldn't mind seen them around.

I like it Robin, and would definitely buy one, but what about the walkers?
Best people to have around you in battles and other war-like conditions. Won't anyone think of the walkers?

Can you mention Boards.ie on the back too, so people can shout encouragement to me, on my walk of shame?

That reminds me of the short forum urls that they implemented a while ago ... goes off to check if HM or anyone asked for an ART one to be setup that we could stick on the back of the tshirt.

I'm sure Boards would be ok with it but we'd have to check to make sure. Ger from pearl izumi is on board so we know it would be a good price and fantastic quality. The only problem would be getting the money as I won't be putting my hand in my own pocket this time but if theres enough interest I'd be prepared to do the work.

I will stick my nose in here as well.....slow day at work!

I would be happy to wear some type of boards.ie t-shirt at say the Dublin Marathon. The main reason is that I know a pile of board members that are going to run that and I would like some way for them to identify me or vice versa to say hello. I wouldnt be interested in joining any type of club though.

But rather than doing an Izoard and running in a bat suit, I dont really see any other easy way to do a meet and greet with other boards.ie people who I havent a clue what they look like. In fairness I remember seeing Slogger Jogger in his one in Connemara and I went straight up and introduced myself so the concept does work

Woddles version would be perfect for someone like me

I am based in the USA and would love a boards.ie tech shirt (like fitted shirts) or something, just an idea. I'd be happy to Paypal money or something.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,365 ✭✭✭hunnymonster

Woddle, I can organise money collection if that helps.

I think the tech teeshirt is a great idea. No one can mistake it for a club "singlet" so should be ok for people who don't want to join a club.

On the club argument, my two main reasons for joining were (1) the guys who are in the club are all fantastic and it's great to be able to cheer on their successes and (2) it makes me a member of the NGB aai. Just as around election time I give out to the moaners who whinge about "the state of the country" but don't bother voting: I don't think you get to give out about the state of athletics unless you've involved in trying to improve it. That's what boards AC gives me (along will cool PI kit!)

Now can we get a hoodie as well?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 4,608 ✭✭✭donothoponpop

A tech top is a great idea. But I'm very fond of my singlet, and like wearing it in races, so I'll print off a form now and join up. That way, I can be right behind HM when she's stickin' it to "The Man" at AAI congress.

Just to echo whats really said above, a tech top would be great and that way the singlet remains BAC as it should be. Id be happy to paypal whoever was organising it the money and then waiting a few weeks while they got made.

Well I guess I'll take hunnymonster up on her offer, I don't know how the whole paypal thing works but is it possible for us to set up an account, lodge the money there and when we have enough give Ger the ok to go and get them and then pay him, is it that simple?

    pretty much
    1. need ok from boards.ie to use logo & agreement on design
    2. need a price and approximate lead time from Ger (is he playing on mountains this week?)
    3. I'll send payment details to people
    4. people pay and we get new kit :-)

So the bits that concern people at the moment:
    1. are you all happy with robinph's design?
    2. get a list going for tops so we can give Ger an approximate number for pricing (assume the more we get the cheaper it'll be)

Pretty much, although there is a small %'age that Paypal take from payments you receive into your account and I'm not sure the best way to get the money out into "real" cash as I've only ever used Paypal earnings to then spend on ebay myself. We'd need details from Ger as to what we can come up with as well before getting as far as actually collecting monies.

+ me too! It would be great to spot boardsies who are warming up for races in their tech tshirts or just passing someone else out training and not just those in singlets minutes before the start of races. Maybe the singlet should be for BAC members alright...so if you have one get on board!!

I'm not quite happy with it yet and it was only thrown together very roughly as a concept, but once there are some specs on what is needed from Ger a more accurate version can be put together.

Agree with you 100% Woddle- I don't like the idea of paying for a shirt that is a free advertisement. I love your design and colour for the Boards singlets, they have become a recognizable "brand" in races already, and could easily be adapted to say "A/R/T" instead of AC, on tech tee's.

I've no problem with wearing the Boards.ie logos for this. The wearing of a T like this is partially for the purpose of advertising the ART forum on Boards afterall. Both to make us recognisable to other boardies at races, and then other people see the T all around the place and then come here to see what it is all about.

    We are boards.ie.
